Great build.  Just one minor mistake -- you're about 10 cars short in each line.

In-n-Out is an interesting phenomenon. The original location in Baldwin Park had lines going out onto the street and around the corner. The one Doug refers to that used to be on Second Street in San Bernardino had some lines creating a navigational hazard; the new one has a bigger lot and a better drive through, but it backs up pretty frequently.

They expanded in Dallas (where a lot of refugees from the People's Republic of California relocated) and had big drive-through lines as well. It started a small "burger war" with Whataburger (the closest thing I can find to In-n-Out in Houston).

Very nice work, Stu.  I have been an In-N-Out customer since 1955 (when I was 8).  I ate my most recent burger at the Lewisville, Texas, location, last Sunday.  The buildings have changed but the food is the same.

Your personal record has been awarded ten merits for outstanding imagination and craftsmanship, as well as attention to detail, in creating a scale model of an In-N-Out Burger drive-through restaurant.

Yes, family owned. The original owner was killed in plane crash some years ago and the kids are running it. They only do fresh product and the rule is that the stores have to be within a day drive from the warehouse. That is why they are only now moving out of the southwest. Now opening some in Texas with a regional warehouse.

It's actually the grand-daughter now. Sad story here. The founder's son was killed (in a plane crash as I recall). The founder's his wife and daughter-in-law ran things. That was working VERY WELL as they slowly continued to expand, but as the founder's wife was getting older, the execs suggested franchising the operation (McDonald's supposedly wanted to buy In-n-Out from them). There were ugly accusations from one of the execs. The customers were up in arms over the prospect of franchising or selling and the company remained with the family (much to the delight of the customers and the employees).

The expansion into the Dallas area threw a lot of people for a loop. They opened a meat processing center in Fort Worth as In-n-Out is very strict about travel time for ingredients -- no more than 8 hours' drive as I recall. The only things frozen at In-n-Out are the ice in the drink stations and the ice cream for shakes. One of the reasons you have a long line of cars at the drive through.

I know where I'm stopping after work.

First, very nice model!

I'm not a veteran of these, but I experienced the line phenomena a few years back when I made the lunch run for a group in our office.  I'm pretty sure I was at the one in Sunnyvale, CA on El Camino Real.  There was a guy with an iPad like device working the line of cars before you got anywhere near a window.

I am sure I liked the burger, but not being a native Californian, I wasn't sure it was worth the trouble of the long line. (I know, sacrilege! )

I was also doing my darnedest to make sure I had all the right "secret words" for some of the burgers my native Californian co-workers ordered.  I was scared the In n Out staff was going to look at me like I had 2 heads with some of the odd code names used that were not listed on the menu.  (Especially since I had to place my order with the iPad guy before being anywhere near the building's normal order station  where I could have seen the actual menu!)

I seem to recall the lot was really full as well, going inside might not have even been an option.

When I tell people about In-n-Out lines, they think I'm kidding. Here's one of the first ones they opened in Texas. I've been to that one -- it's great.

Here's a link to the Article in the UK Daily Mail. "Tears and a two-mile-long line..."

Maybe one of your cars should have one of those bumper stickers people made from the normal "IN AND OUT BURGER" bumper sticker, shortening it to "IN AND OUT URGE"!  No lie!

By the way, for those of us who eat healthy, you can ask them to double all the veggies (at no additional cost.)  That makes it more like having a salad and a burger - obviously very healthy....

I think In n Out bought the Rock and Roll McDonalds. Now Chicago will have the best burgers! I can't wait, if it's true, that is.
