Purchased this new, old stock, Kline 40369-12097 (K3400-98DC) 0-6-0 steam switcher a while back. It has been residing on my layout, but not run, for more than a year. This engine is equipped with Lionel Railsounds and Trainmaster Command. It is programmed and responds to TMCC commands. However, the performance of this engine is disappointing. It requires excess throttle to get moving, and once moving requires reduction of throttle to keep an even speed. It does not like curves. Any curve in the rails causes it to slow down and then requires significant increase in throttle to sustain speed. Minimum curves on my layout are 72 inch. It doesn't like grades and requires significant increase in throttle to maintain speed on any grade. My grades are about max 4 percent. My other command engines will pull long, heavy trains over my grades. Is this performance typical of 0-6-0 steam switchers?

The engine has a small motor and no cruise control. Installing a ERR Cruise M will give constant speed but won't increase the power. It should pull about ten freight cars no problem though.

Thanks for the reply, Pete. I have a cruise M kit. Looks like the cruise M board replaces one of the boards inside the engine. It's pretty cramped in the engine shell. Don't know that I want to attempt an install. Fat fingers, small space.
I've upgraded a bunch of these with the Cruise-M, it makes it into a new engine! It's really not that hard, it drops right into the A-5.
Its actually easier to install a Cruise M in the 0-4-0 than the 0-6-0. The heat sink holes have to be ovaled out so the board can be angled in to fit. It barely makes it but does fit and worth the effort. Someone who has done it before can likely do it in less than 30 minutes but if you haven't its worth sending it out.

If you ever decide you want one in the TMCC Camelback, I'd send that one out! What a giant PITA! The 1/8" of the board and the different placement of connectors conspire to make that one ugly! I've done a few, and I end up removing connectors on the motherboard and hard wiring stuff just so the board will fit in. I was dreaming about a Super-Chuffer in one, but that idea went out the window when I saw the inside of the engine!

John I believe this one has everything you desire in it.
Sid, I have an MTH Camelback with ERR cruise, sound, and of course, my Super-Chuffer and fan driven smoke. I could do it to the Lionel, but I'd have to gut it and start over, I wasn't really all that keen on doing that.

Oh I know about hitting and starting from scratch trust me. Those legacy upgrades start from bare bone nothing. I totally get it. Why do it to the Lionel when the mth may be easier.😁
