Every once in a while I run across a 1960's Postwar Lionel freight car that has wheels that are a bit unusual.
These wheels have two bars cast onto the back of the wheels, just a little bit off center.
I don't recall ever seeing these wheels described in any of my reference material.
Anybody ever notice, or know anything about them?
Any time I've seen them, I think all eight wheels were made the same way.
Below is a photograph taken of the wheels on a 6047 caboose.

The wheels are the normal color. Don't know why they look off in the photo.  They are sintered, just like any other postwar freight car wheel. Definitely not fast angle.

As I wrote before, I've run into freight cars with these wheels from time to time. I think they have always been 1960's cars.

The Lionel service manual documents some changes to the front of the wheel to go with changes to the inside of the plastic truck sides. I don't recall seeing any mention to changes to the back.
The cars I've seen from 1968-69 do not have these bars.
