I have three Lionel Commodore Vanderbilt engines, one Gray, one Red and one Blue. Can anyone suggest the approiate passenger cars to run with each Commodore engine? Did lionel ever make the Mercury cars.
Thanks

Lionel never made Mercury cars at least the original ones. The CV pulled heavyweights. The red Cardinal train cars might be good for your red CV. Not aware of any blue cars lettered for the NYC though.

There was a set of 10 NYC heavyweight cars made for the Vanderbilts
However the engine struggles to pull all 10.
Enjoy the CV, it has one of the best sounding whistle Lionel made

Pete, I've considered the Cardinal train but they come with the steamer which makes for a very expensive set. I haven't found anyone will to break up the set.

I was considering these as well but didn’t need another Pacific. MTH did a Railking set that are actually pretty nice if smaller.

I didn't know MTH nade a Cardinal set. I looked it up, made in 2008 and it may be impossible to find. I'll try the bay..

Williams made their 72" heavyweight cars in Pullman livery. That's what my Commodore pulls. The cars were not easy to find 15 years ago, but it seems like Trainworld, or maybe Mario had some.
The MTh NYC Rexall pass set would work with the Blue Commodore and the MTH not Lionel Cardinal pass set would work. Both are available in the after market.
