I remember being up till 2 am restringing mine.  That’s one of those things that, once you do it, you’re like, ok dumbass, don’t ever turn the crane upside down again, ok.  Great toy train piece.  I sold mine.  I’d like to say I regret it, but I wouldn’t be using it so it’s fine.  Best of luck with your restringing project and I hope you have fun with it.

I agree with all of the above---it is a nightmare to attempt to restring the crane especially when I can only blame myself for screwing it up in the first place! Taking it off display shelf to put on layout I juggled it enough to have some boom strings come off the rollers they should be on----I tried with tweezers and a pin to realign them correctly but was able to have crane work as it should perfectly even if my realignment was not correct!!!! I always try to do repairs perfectly as they should but admit I used my wife's words of wisdom "good enough" to stop in my pursuit of excellence. Wise words to follow in this case---I just tried the crane again and all functions work as they should and I am not going to even attempt to tinker with it....just lucky it works as it should and I am a member of the elite group who have suffered from the TMCC crane syndrome nightmare!

Thanks I appreciate the info so when I need to do a total restring I now know where to obtain the best type and deal! I thoroughly tested crane and functions again today and as I mentioned even though the boom strings are not exactly perfect, everything works flawlessly so I best leave well enough alone.  All those windings in the boom can make your head spin especially I am sure if you are trying to do a restring.
