While I have no business responding to these "What the mfrs. should build" threads, as it is been a long while (years) since MTH put out a "What would you like us to build?" questionaire...and have you ever seen one from Lionel?  I do not believe anybody but potential customers read these (and the site hosts).  Weaver has done custom runs so that makes them responsive to the buyer.  ((MTH has, too, in the past, done custom runs, for I remember a shop (long defunct)  outside Lafayette, Ind. that offered that little 2-6-0 from MTH in Monon and Wabash?? livery.))

I want scale length cars.  I do not want shorties.  I do not remember what was the

diameter of the track on a childhood Hafner windup, but I think it was tighter than

0-27.  It is better that both scale and shorties be offered for the market, as there is

a demand for both ,(Walthers knew that at least in the 1940's, for they offered their

passenger car kits in short and scale versions)  but if I was going with shorties, I could run six inch Marx cars on that Hafner track and really pave my trainroom with track, OR have an O gauge coffee table layout to run while sitting in front of the boob tube.  Many, of course, so down to a smaller scale...Z gauge in a brief case, running

scale length cars.

(I compromise by modeling a short line/branch line and can run prototypically small

engines and short trains, with scale cars, on broad curves)

Speaking of Walthers, their scale length (39 foot) Sierra Branch passenger car kits

and somebody's pricey brass models of same show up on the internet.  Now those are

prototypical shorties.

Many of the passenger sets I have I had to fab from other production sets. For example, I took a set of Rail-king Amtrak bi-level cars, repainted and decaled for Santa Fe. I picked up the cars cheap, and now have a unique set. Going forward, since decal sources are few now, we're going to depend more on new production at prohibitive pricing. We'll just have to see how this works out.......

I sure hope someone is listening to us.

I agree, within the last couple of years, N scale and HO manufactures have produced very nice models of the AT&SF Hi-Level cars and they have been very popular. This was a unique train when it was introduced back in the 50's and was the predecessor to the Amtrak Superliners of today. I know Lionel and K-Line made so called Hi-Level cars but they were actually Superliner cars with Santa Fe markings, not true Budd built cars. Even so, those turned out to be pretty popular as well, try finding those on the Bay, if you do find them, they go for big $$$.

I would love to see one or more of the O scale manufacture's produce this unique train set. The 21" Zephyr cars produced by Atlas look fantastic, I would be all in, if one of the O scale Manufactures produced the Hi-Levels as nice as the Zephyr cars have turned out. I'll just keep dreaming!

What kind of interest would there be for 21" Golden Gate Depot Pullman Standard Amtrak Coaches?  If I can generate enough interest, there is a good possibility of having a custom run done.  As I've mentioned in other posts about 3rd Rail, GGD and Sunset product, it takes 40 cars total in 2 and 3 rail to make it happen.

If it were to happen, what paint scheme?  I am interested in Phase III paint, but smooth side coaches ran in phases I, II and III.

Is there enough interest in forty cars total?  Let me know!  This could be very cool!

Id take a few in phase I.

See the other GGD lightweight coach thread, there's discussion about adding amtrak cars to that project.

I'm currently working on a phase I set, and a Phase 4/5 mixed set, so really phase I is the only one that would float my boat. There's enough cars coming out in phase I right now, between the GGD sleepers and the atlas CZ cars to make an honest to goodness phase I train.

This would only be able to be produced by MTH

Grand Trunk Western passenger service GP9 or GP18 diesel locomotive to pull the

Grand Trunk Western 18" Passenger cars in the 1960-1971 "wet-noodle" scheme.

This GTW series would have a very narrow segment of appeal, so the possible buyers would have to step forward and commit ahead of time by ordering early to insure production.
