Could someone offer advice if a layout wired for DCC would also run DCS in 2-rail? Also which is most restrictive? If I were to wire the layout for DCC would it meet all requirements to run DCS or DCC trouble-free or is it the other way around? I understand that I would only be able to run either DCC or DCS at a time, but I would like the wiring to allow either.

I just started building my first ever train layout, in 2-rail O-Scale. Earlier this year I bought an ESU ECoS DCC system & also some books on wiring, Atlas’ “The Complete Atlas Wiring Book” & Kalmbach’s “Wiring your Model Railroad”. I am impressed with Brian Huang’s DCS operation & might buy the MTH DCS control system also in the next few years.

Thanks,

I wired for DCC before and it was the same for DCS. I actually had about the same troubles getting good DCC signal around. Power dropping over length was a factor. Someone suggested using a light bulb to terminate for DCC also back then.

You have to think for command wiring that track power is usually a fixed value. It wouldn't matter which command type you chose.

DCS lays it's signal over the power. DCC signal is in the power. Getting the power there is the biggest issue I think.

My HO layout was DCC and was buss wired. It worked without issue. I just couldn't see good enough to stay with HO scale.

When I started building a G scale layout, I had many issues with DCC and power drops. To be honest, I never sorted it out. I got frustrated at that moment with DCC products that always seemed to say, you need more stuff. I spent over a grand and it didn't work reliably.

I got a MTH G scale Challenger engine with free remote. I bought a TIU. That system did not work either!

I came here to this forum and started reading tips for O scale and applied them to my G scale. I got a tip to look at Ray Manley's site also for G scale tips. I got a couple of basic tips directly from a MTH tech on the phone too. I had never heard of electrically breaking a loop of track at a joint before this. The second I did the system sprang to life.

I have to say that it was timing for me that got me running all DCS. I never ran DCC with O because of the timing of the way things went for me.
