SCALE (NEVER RUN)

RS-3 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE – 3 Rail

#5501 Pennsylvania

A new in the box O scale Weaver RS3. This is the early production single motor chain drive version.

I think also it is one of the best drives available. This is the original Weaver drive that came out in first RS3s.   Weaver also used it in the original FA-FB series and the original GP38s.  One of the best drives ever put in an O Scale engine.  The only thing you have to watch for is split tower gears.  They are easy to get from P&D Hobbies.

Bruce,

How do they sound, I mean the chain drive?  I wonder if it's louder than a 3rd Rail E7 with the belt drive?

Is only 1 truck belt driven, the other free wheeling?

I've read where people replace the gears with PD gears or others and change the gear ratio to make the engine slower, is there a chart somewhere that shows which gears to get?

I'd like any system that took up less room, did not stick up in the cabs, and enabled the engine to crawl thru turnouts.

Bob, Properly adjusted and lubricated, they run great. I have several of those drives. The other truck is driven by a shaft that runs through the fuel tank. Parts are readily available from P&D.

PS: easy as pie to convert to 2R too.

I don't know, I have never run this engine.

The chain drive in the Weaver RS is nowhere near as noisy as the drive in the 3rd Rail E7.  Back in the 90's when I still ran mostly conventional, I came to enjoy the sound.

The chain drive still operates after all these years, although I don't use the RS3 very much.

I doubt I could get used to the E7 drive noise.  However, because of the sound unit, the noise from the drive is a non-issue.
