This is a first starter layout that builds on a starter set adding turnouts, bumpers and O-48 curved sections. Even though it is a small layout, it follows some guiding principles that I have found helpful: (1) O-48 Easements into the O-36 curves for better appearance as trains enter and leave the curves. (2) It includes terrain both above and below the track level and layout base - building up and carving into the 2" thick foam layout base. (3) Track diverges from the rectangle of the layout base with curves and angles. (4) Track power connections are on the curves, so that any voltage loss occurs over the straight sections, so trains will tend less to slow down on the curves (with conventional control - a small matter for this small layout). (5) Power can be shut off (center rail on-off) on the spurs, so that a second engine can be parked (with conventional control). (6) Light weight layout base and foam layer mountain make the layout easily portable, and can slide under a bed, set up on the floor or on a table.
