Gentlemen, Has anyone out there successfully removed the center rail on Atlas O Gauge 3-rail track and switches? Reason: I have switched to Dead Rail battery-powered engines, and want to run both 2-rail and 3-rail engines and cars on the same track. (I also understand the need to shim the switch guardrails and/or the frog bottoms to keep the 2-rail cars from clunking their way thru these hi-rail turnouts.) BTW, battery-powered engines tend to run smooth as silk, especially when paired with DCC modules for finer motor control. And they are fairly easy to convert.
Another reason for wanting to modify this Atlas track is that I have gobs of it, and I couldn't afford to buy 2-rail hi-rail track...even if it was available. Said another way, being retired, I have more time than money. And I'm fairly certain that, when properly ballasted, this stuff should look at least a tad more prototypical than its center-railed older cousin...maybe even 2-3 tads! So, any thoughts on this conversion would be greatly appreciated. Stay safe. JP
