Hello everyone, I'm new to the group, finally got my Lionel 520 working, but somewhere in its life it lost one of the four "lights" on the corners of its roof. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm thinking about searching out a broken shell as a donor and transplanting the part I need onto mine. Has anyone else tried this? Has anyone out there got a broken shell they're willing to part with? Let me know, thanks. JB

JB,
I think that you'll be unhappy with a transplant. This is why I feel that you would be better off replacing the entire shell. This is my two cents.
I've had a fair number of 520's, and seen a whole lot more. It's hard for me to imagine what a shell would look like with one light knocked off.
Can you post a picture?
If you can't find a donor, how about replacing all the headlights with cast working ones from prewar engines like an 8 or 10?

CW,
I must say that it just might work. Would look good too if one made the lights directional. Oh No! Here I go getting ideas for a weekend project.
Here's a photo, it's a pretty simple fix if I can find the part. The base of it is square, I think if I cut the donor off neatly It should just be a matter of carefully filing of the "nub" still on the shell and then cementing on the transplant. I like the idea of making them functional, I'd need some white LED's and a circuit, and drill out the "lights" to fit the LED's, but that could look really cool on my layout! JB
