I have a CAB-1, Command Base and two Powermasters, which I think are all I need to control my small double-track layout (about 6-1/2 x 10 plus a 3-track spur yard). I usually operate one of my 3 TMCC-equipped locomotives on one loop of track and a conventional locomotive on the other track. Occasionally I take my CAB-1 and a Powermaster to a venue where I let kids run a conventional train on a 4 x 6 layout with one loop of track.
My problem is that the CAB-1 will no longer communicate with the Command Base or the Powermasters. i've checked the batteries (they are good, and I've changed them out with new batteries also checked good). I think the problem is that one of the four battery contact tabs has broken off. If this is the cause of my problem, is it practical to repair the CAB-1? Is it an "amateur" job or do I need to take it to a Lionel Service Station, or send it back to Lionel.
As an alternative, should I buy a new CAB-1L? If I take this approach, will I need any additional equipment? I have no interest in upgrading to Legacy at this time.
Thanks for any help someone might offer.
