Wondering what 3 rail O gaugers have done to make your engines and cars look more prototypical to the CB&Q. What O gauge models that are no longer manufactured that are good representations for Q models. As for me, I recently took an MTH 2-8-2 and repainted and lettered it for the Q, see photo. Although the number is no correct, it is close. The reason for not changing the number is because I could not find any new decals to use for the head light or tender light. Would be interested in seeing your photos and corresponding with you.

Didn't Third Rail do the "Colorado" (2-10-2?) or some other large Q engine?  Due to

the area I model, the Q is one of those I'd expect to interchange with and so I pick

up Q cars and maybe, though not yet, interesting steam power if available.  Also,

since the C&S was a Q subsidiary, I do have standard gauge C&S cars and have contemplated a rocking chair narrow gauge branch in On3 that would be C&S.

3rd Rail, Sunset Models, did a Q Hudson, 4-6-4, Northern 4-8-4 and the Colorado 2-10-2 that are all scale models in both 2 and 3 rail brass.

Mullet River Model Works has a beautiful Q waycar, but it is true scale 2 rail. Wonder what it would look like with 3 rail trucks.

MTH has a nice Q USRA 0-8-0 that I have and really like, but wish they would have done a real coal load on the tender instead of the molded coal.

I have an MTH 2-8-0, Western Maryland version, that I am going to make into a C&S engine, but I need to find a USRA tender with 2 axle trucks.

Sunset/3rd Rail produced the following CB&Q steam locomotives over the last 6 or 8 years, or so:

1) O5a and O5b class 4-8-4s

2) M4s class 2-10-4s ( the CB&Q Colorado class) in both the Elesco AND Worthington BL feedwater configurations.

3) S4 and S4a class 4-6-4 Hudsons in at least three different configurations/road numbers.

Sunset/3rd Rail also offered the CB&Q wood "steam era" caboose (brass) in various road numbers.

I also have a custom modified MTH 2-8-2, that has had the Elesco Feedwater heater and pump added, in order to represent, as close as possible, a Burlington O class 2-8-2.

Now how did I miss this one!...

Me, I'm doing a few things-

-Atlas 4-4-2 repainted in Q colors{no golden herald due to lack of O decals, darn}

-RMT Beep in the blackbird scheme using S decals...it's a small engine

-MTH GG1 repainted today in light grey for a greyback scheme using S decals...because they shoulda had one.

-Just opened up some side holes on a spare Lionel caboose to make a Q waycar/caboose and will use S scale boxcar doors because they fit perfectly height wise. Won't be caboose red...looking at orange maybe...

-Repainted an MTH container into a silver Q container...did an REA too{why not at that point}...

-future projects will include the repainting of my bachmann 0n30 2-6-6-2 into a Q mallet as well as the 0n30 railbus and trailer into Q as well....probably do up the 4 0n30 dual dump hoppers into Q while I'm at it and decal my undecorated way caboose into Q - C&S data though.

-Need to get back to my lil 0n30 GE export class 91 bash as that one was to be done in redbird paint or cascade green/burlington...I see a pattern here, despite the user name!

 They get that big even in HO?!....Ohhhhhh could it be so easy!!!

Would love to see photos of your work. What Lionel caboose did you use?

 That can be arranged, and I have no idea what caboose it is- plastic frame/body removable cupola -now has one hole in the side{soon to be another}

Great idea to use the Bachmann On30 2-6-6-2.

They had Mallets, and my railroad will too.

Post photos when you can.

 I will do that tonight- at home for lunch right now...another coat of paint on the GG1 and will gloss clear it tonight in prep for decals.

Ok, here's some current projects that are in the works-

My Atlas 4-4-2 in Q{working on relocating the electronics to the tender still}- new tender top, caol load and back up light

CB&Q repaints 001

The unknown type lionel caboose- here's the plastic frame, it's been modded{not be me} and will be re-modded before I'm done...I'm thinking of a frame mounted flanger too, just to be different...body done 1st, then we'll see...note the mismatched trucks{not me, it's how I got it}

CB&Q repaints 002

Here's the caboose body marked off for cutting

CB&Q repaints 003

Here's the other side already cut with working S scale door and scratched track - guess where the cut out window is going. The roof was filled and smoothed where the origonal smoke stack was- it'll get relocated later when the other door is done.

CB&Q repaints 004RMT Beep in the very 1st stages of decalling- those decals take a few tries of solva-set to get them to settle down over the railing holes

CB&Q repaints 005

I forgot about this one, but pulled her out for your thoughts- will eventually be painted either gold to mimic the Q excursion steamer, or silver to mimic an Aeolus{II}when I can figure out a better smokebox front to make so it's less Gs looking and more flat...probably scratch something...then figure out the decals{that'll be the tough part!}

Thank you...I try.

1] the 4-4-2 is an Atlas Industrial series...I took it apart to fix the high front end shift when powered...it was only alittle, but it bugged me...the project snowballed from there.

2]That caboose has to be an early '80s or so with that plastic frame- no part number on it to give you or I would....sorry. If it helps any it was a Rock Island herald prior to my messing with it.

3]Those decals are from Des Plaines Hobbies...btw, they have they're friday to sunday sale again since the last time the weather was so bad...I drove there from Aurora so it wasn't all that bad....or I was that crazy{flip a coin}. The sale is good for internet purchases too, or call about those decals...as I recall the store has nearly everything at least 25% off or better till sunday.{hint hint, nudge nudge, wink wink, eh...yeah, too much Monty Python, I know}

Here are a couple of photos of Hot Water's believable representation of an O-4 class Q mikado:

Can't remember what class the Q 0-8-0s are, but here is Hot's Lionel version.

OK I thought I would not like the GG1 in Burlington, but you did a great job, and if I had overhead wires, I think I would copy you.

Looking at the first photo, I would put the number to the right of the right door, then on the left side of the left door, I would put Everywhere West. On the other side, I would then do the same thing except put Way of the Zephyrs.

Where did you get the red strip with the words BURLINGTON inside?

Also, I would put the number directly under the head light as well.

Fair enough...and we don't have any real catenary...it's fictitious like our engines.

Typically they wouldn't have slogans on greybacks, but then again they never had GG1s either...

The "Burlington" lettering wouldn't fit between the ladder pockets so I stuck that decak over the red striping...leaves me with some open realistate for a herald on the side....maybe.

Also, I would put the number directly under the head light as well.

My thoughts- I'd like the numbers in 4 forward corners like the origonals werte, or, on the doors each end and centered on the side body...honestly, I never got far enough ahead to ponder number placement-lol.

Slow but sure...I'l keep posting here to possibly inspire others to play along with their Q items. This is obviously a whimsical build, but to try a more prototypical version would require 2 cabooses to lengthen the body/chassis...for me it'd be easier to just pull out the scribed evergreen sheets and make a new body for that version....and find the correct trucks for that combine/caboose too.

Ok, a tad more tweeking on mine...the smoke stack wasn't tall enough per my prototype pic, so I just made a new stack rather than try to mod the one piece origonal. an .015 thick 3/8" disc folded over a 1/8" tube, then a .040 thick disc{forgot the diameter} drilled with a 1/8" hole for the stack base - I round the edges on that to look like a flange.

I'm toying with the idea of 4 cupola struts as I've seen "some" have them and some don't......actually most don't.

Q frame 001

Q frame 002

Q frame 003

Oh, the new trucks are Atlas caboose trucks which support the type used on my prototype caboose pic{cool} but mounting them was a challenge using the lionel base. I had to make a spacer plate to go over and around the Atlas plastic top plug to which the screw to hold the truck on, goes to. I mic'd the thickness of the top plug - it was .092 thick, so I punched out 2 different thicknesses of sheet to make my spacer- .060 and .040{= .100 giving me about .008 play}. I capped that with an .040 cap to hold the plug in and for the truck to ride on. When done the Atlas trucks sat nice and tight to the frame and under the end platforms...to do it over again, I'd relocate the truck centers farther outward..maybe 1/8"...

I can take the trucks off if anyone wants to see those new mounting plates better.

One problem with those Atlas trucks is the top plug is a struck slot and the bottom is a phillips...hard to tighten the whole thing up and now I have to cover those holes with something{crate on the side door end} or if you had assembled it before the new flooring you'd never have access to those top plugs with the floor over it...it was a toss up for me but I like this way a tad better, just in case I need the access.

Time to start the painting...let the orange paint flow{black roof though}...
