A friend and I, both here in Alaska have been working with a guy in Indiana to get some custom painted locomotives to represent the Bicentennial locomotives that the ARR ran in 1976 and for several years following. You can get these in N and HO but no one makes them in O gauge. A lot of work and parts have been involved and shipped around the country. My friend bought into a 3D printer and made the snowplow and pilot assemblies, the winterization hatches and the steam generator covers as used on the Alaska Railroad. We had to have custom decals made to fit, you can also get those in smaller gauges but not in O. It's been quite a project and my locomotives were the first to be finished. The ARR never ran a matching B unit, but we felt with all the pictures we had seen when they ran a B unit in the usual Alaska colors, it was just so out of place so working with the decal people, we had a set of decals for the B unit made up. Also made up and still under construction is a matching Caboose representing the caboose the ARR had in 1976 to match. There are custom 3D printed parts for that too and hopefully it will be finished and ready to ship around months end. But these are a great set and a representation of the trains I remember seeing as a kid here in Alaska in 1976.

That’s cool. I painted an old Lionel Alco for my dad in those colors.
Wow! Those locos turned out amazing!!! Beautiful paint scheme. I’m surprised MTH hasn’t made ones in that paint. They would be a huge hit with the patriotic colors.
I like your pipeline on the layout too!! Thanks for the pics and video.
Those look great! My friend up in Fairbanks that is working on this project with me has the guy painting him a F Unit set like yours, same scheme, The Yellow is a little off but its good enough for him.

Thanks BigTruckPete, we tried emailing both MTH and Lionel to see if they were interested because we thought the same. Typical big company, no answer. So we had to do what we had to do and found a guy to paint.
Cool stuff on your page.
I put a sound system in a B-Unit. I’ll probably make an SD40 unit next. I have an SD40 sound board to use. I need to order some ERR boards - hope they aren’t all gone yet.
Very impressive work! I think they look great!

RK, the ERRCo isn't taking any more orders, they got swamped with all of us hitting them before they go. There is a pinned post with a letter from Lionel on it at the top the forum for 3 rail. I had to order a Cruise Commander and sound system for a GP38 dummy that I put powered trucks and motors in. Wasn't going to order so soon, but they are going away. It should be here Monday. My friend thinks he has a spare AC commander and maybe a sound unit for the Bicentennial. It's still conventional.
I, too am an ARR fan. I don't know if you are aware of John's Alaska Railroad website. Here are some photos of the train. Here is a search result of his website with Bicentennial photos and such.
Nice work on your set! Congratulations.
I do only today's SD70's, freight (which is still some oldies) and working on passenger cars.

Oh yeah, we definitely know about John's page. We referenced a lot of the pictures from his page and pretty much every other picture we could find on the web. John's page is a great wealth of information on the ARR!

Thanks Joe! The pipeline was a result of my layout being on a shelf. I needed a way to run wires and running them under wasn't going to work because everyone would see them. So since I'm in Alaska, running the Alaska Railroad, I have a lot of things representing Alaska and the Trans Alaska Pipeline became the answer! Its delivering energy, just this time its electricity and not oil.
I will say it again here, That is a super paint job, Norm!
