I like to run MU'd diesels, today I decided to try it with steam. The engines I am using are:

1. 20-3643-1 Southern 2-8-2 #4501 w/PS3 (hereafter referred to as lead engine)

2. 20-3464-1 Southern 4-6-2 #1375 w/PS3 (hereafter referred to as trailing engine)

The sound (chuffing) on the lead engine is normal, but the sound on the trailing engine is barely audible. I have to put my ear right next to the tender to make it out. I first ran both engines separately and the sound is normal on both. Then after starting them up again as a doubleheader and following the instructions on page 101 of my DCS Companion (2nd ed.) I selected each engine and made sure the engine sounds on both were set to 100. The sounds on the trailing engine are still barely audible. Everything else seems ok. They run together well, smoke and lights work as they should (except no firebox glow on trailing engine, but I am more interested in the sound). Is there anyway to get the sound levels the same? I was really wanting to hear the sound of two steam engines running together.

I don't think the following information has anything to do with this issue, but I added it just to be thorough.

layout is 9x6 using Realtrax

power is one Z-1000 through fixed 1

TIU is I3

TIU and handheld upgraded to 5.0

If both locos are uncoupled, but in the lashup mode, and running a few inches from each other, do they stay the same distance apart?  If not, (1) they shouldn't be run together to avoid damage and (2) as a result protochuff may be raising sound on one and reducing it oin the other.  You didn't say if you had reversed the order of the locos; try that and see what happens.
