Was poking around on-line looking for a caboose for the Canadian Grain Train that Im putting together. Found a CP extended vision caboose on Ebay for $24.99 @ "buy it now"! Clicked on it, payed for it, bought it. Received it in the mail yesterday and was looking it over and noticed a bottle of smoke fluid in the box. I said, "whats this for". Read the instructions that comes with the caboose and what a surprise, It's a smoking caboose. I fired her up and smoke started billowing out the stack. What a deal!! Ive seen these things go for $50 and up. Way Cool!!

And it wasn't listed as a smoking caboose!!!

I saw that, and considered buying the SD40 that came with that set,

but after closer inspection found out that that locomotive is a cheap

MPC loco, with plastic trucks and plastic frame. very light weight with

no pulling power.

I think the T-stack is, indeed, missing.  See link of similar Lionel item...

CP Caboose

Shouldn't be too much of a problem.  The style of caboose is common enough that a replacement part should be easy to obtain.

Nice deal, though!

Guys,

I realize that people are trying to be helpful, but there's a lot of wrong information presented here.

1) The matching locomotive (6-18203 from 1989) has none of the low-end features you list. It has dual Pullmor motors, die-cast metal trucks, a metal frame and Magnetraction. "Old school" -- yes, but "cheap" -- no.

2) It doesn't look great, but there wasn't a smoke stack top designed for this particular caboose. It came from the factory just like your photograph.

Otherwise good deal.

I don't think its been run that often. It was basically brand new in the box. There was some shelf dust on it, looked like it was displayed. other than that its in great shape.

I must have been looking at the wrong pic of The CP SD-40. It had plastic side truck frames.

Its not so much how much track time its got on it but how long you run the smoke unit at one time as the heat gradually builds up inside and can result in this:

Well I don't want that to happen. Think Ill pull her apart and see If I can put a heat shield inside her.

I did say "I think" not "you are" because I wasn't sure.  I personally haven't seen a smoking caboose without a T on top, but that doesn't mean it wasn't possible, just something Popi might want to look into, which he did and found out there wasn't one.

Well, I for one stand corrected!  After seeing the exploded parts diagram from Lionel, it's clear that they had no 'T-Stack' on this model.  There ya go!  Your ebay deal is as good as you first thought!  Attaboy!

I keep hoping for one of those..."deals"...a special find.  Ah, well, York is just a couple weeks away.   Just maybe......!

I thought this was the only CP Rail Extended Vision caboose (6-17640) with a working smoke generator...

CP Rail...This one was listed for $95 on eBay. It came out in 2002.

The caboose in the first picture looks like it was from a CP Rail set from 1989. I think Lionel made 2 CP Rail "smoking" cabooses and the one in the first picture isn't one of them.

Also, I was thinking the Top of the stack may be missing due to temp of the area.

A plastic stack will certainly melt. A metal one will be very hot so keep kids fingers away.

I like that Idea, enjoy a soda and reuse the can for my caboose.

We train guys know how to "think green"!!

yours also looks like it has an antenna running across the roof, which mine does not have.

I was surprised to see that is in fact a smoker. I'm not sure if it has lights or a detailed interior though.

That's still a great price ($24.99), however, lights/interior or not.

Mine did also come with lights.
