I did not have any I-devices until a few weeks ago when I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6”. I need the Tablet to shoot 1000-yard rifle matches that use electronic targets. Now that I have the Tablet, I am considering WiFi to control my trains. I downloaded the Quick Start and Full Manuals for DCS WiFi, but they do not answer the few questions I have; or at least I did not find the topics.

1) How do you determine whether to use MTH WiFi, or Home WiFi? Would it be just trial and error to see which works best?

2) Will the MTH WIU system support the two TIU’s I have in Super Mode? To which TIU do I connect the MTH WIU?

3) With the Tablet, will I be able to access the Record/Playback feature to record and playback sessions? (My favorite MTH DCS feature!)

4) How bug free is the MTH WIU system now?

Thank you for your help!

Alex,

If you have a copy of The DCS Companion 3rd Edition, it will answer, in detail, your first 3 questions on pages 207-223.

Regardless, I can give you short answers to your questions:

1) How do you determine whether to use MTH WiFi, or Home WiFi? Would it be just trial and error to see which works best?

Home mode allows both Internet access and also access to the Lionel Legacy iCab and LCS apps. MTH mode allows neither.

2) Will the MTH WIU system support the two TIU’s I have in Super Mode? To which TIU do I connect the MTH WIU?

You must have one WIU per TIU. Presently, this allows use of Standard TIU mode for all of your TIUs. Super TIU mode will be included in the Premium version of the app, scheduled to be released later this year.

3) With the Tablet, will I be able to access the Record/Playback feature to record and playback sessions? (My favorite MTH DCS feature!)

Again, that feature will be included in the Premium version of the app.

4) How bug free is the MTH WIU system now?

To the best of my knowledge, only a couple of very minor bugs are in the latest app and WIU software. The app runs extremely well on my layout with 3 TIUs and 3 WIUs. I use an iPhone 7, iPad Mini 4 and iPad Mini 2.

The WIU only controls the TIU it's connected to. So you need one for each TIU. 3 for 3 tius

Now about the statement "later this year". Maybe  that should read "sometime in this decade".

Any longer from MTH, and I'm going to start filming episodes of Adam's family with my trains!

I waited something like about 2 years for DCS 5.0 which does not run large mixed consists dependably. You can't have certain engines in certain positions or directions without triggering bugs. The lights still flashed but we learned how to fix that. Some lights in a consist get set all over the charts whether they are on or off or......

I am a big fan of MTH but they are losing me here. I need to flash back to 4.2 and deal with the bugs there. The wifi sits on a shelf waiting for it's day in the sun. I just don't run single engines that much.  If you do you should be fine.

If they want to sell more WIFI units, they'd better offer software that works correctly to use it completely and dependably.....soon.
