O it's Nice! A good placement.
The DD40AX that I see NS operate near me are the typical black. I never noticed the space in the center.

The DD40AX
Correct name is DDA40X.
that I see NS operate near me are the typical black.
Since when did/does the Norfolk Southern have ANY DDA40X units?
I never noticed the space in the center.
I'd like to see the NS unit!!!!

NS doesn't have any. UP was the only purchaser and they only use theirs on special trains.

Not when they were in regular service, i.e. "only use theirs on special trains". The DDA40X units were used all over the UP system, and even on the Western Pacific after the UP/WP merger. Today, the UP has only one functional DDA40X, number 6936, and THAT is generally used rarely, and only on special executive passenger car movements.
Ok, that was cool.

maybe, It's the Camden, NJ yard servicing a small line to the south west along the Delaware River with a refinery in Paulsboro, NJ, a couple of trash to steam plants and a few other industries towards the Bridgton, NJ area.
The engine type is lettered under the cab. I could have confused it with dash9 markings. I am looking during drive-bys -so not very accurate
They have been MU'ing them with an SD?? unit. Now you have me second guessing what I saw.
They built some long sidings in the Woodbury area and have been parking full trains to manage traffic. I'll try to get some photos.

maybe, I first saw them in UP paint - now they are Black with white stripes and lettering for NS. Sorry but, except for the UP number 6936, there are NO MORE functional EMD DDA40X units on ANY railroad. There are a few "hulks" in parks/museums, while all the others were scrapped.

Then it is either an error, or you might have miss-read it. Besides, the DD models had 4-axle trucks (NOT 3-axle), thus none of those are in operation anywhere in the U.S. either.
They have been MU'ing them with an SD70M.
Nope.

Your photos really put the size of our models in perspective!!!
According to this NS locomotive roster, updated Sept, 1, 2017, Norfolk Southern has exactly 0 DDA40X's.
Why would the NS want to buy oddball locomotives the UP retired 32 years ago anyway, when newer more efficient power is available? Besides, only 12 of the 47 units UP owned still exist.
Now, NS has locomotives with full width cabs, but a full width cab does not a DDA40X make.

Aliens...it's always aliens.
Alien infiltrated senior management at NS had bought ten DDA40 units from EMD.
They were designated DDA40NS and numbered 51 to 61.
Rumor has it that Jack Wheelihan, < dressed in NS black of course >, helped deliver these units and has an autograph from one the alien executives.
