Other than an occasional temporary floor layout, the only one I only finished was a 4x8 Super O layout based on the 2 loop Super O plan D223. My most current layout started in2011.....and, it's not finished! I know, I know, a layout is never truly finished.....But, I do want to get to the point where I don't have a list of things that need completion.

Part of the problem is that once you start running trains, it's what you want to do ...instead of finishing the projects that need to be done....

I am on a mission to see what I can accomplish in 2018.

Here is the layout starting in 2011:

I have made lots of progress. The wiring of switches and accessories has taken a long time. It didn't help that I did something wrong with the power and burnt out 20+ Atlas switch motors and has to replace them all with D-1000s.

Here are some pics I took this weekend. The layout is 6x16, with 3 levels: a 6x8 lower level subway. A 6x16 2 loop main middle level. A 2x16 upper level dedicated to engine servicing.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one here with an "almost finished, but not quite done" layout.

Very nice plan Peter. Lot's of switching and industries with main line running. I like all of the operating accessories too.

The upper level is very interesting. Does it connect to the main or do you use the five finger crane to move the trains to the main line?

Bob

Yes, the 5 fingered crane......it more of a detailed storage area with operation accessories.....

Its a neat idea. I have been considering adding bench work and a yard on a shelf on one wall to the right of my layout. I was planning having it connect to the layout but this is an interesting way to add more operation.

now I just need to convince the CEO

Its coming along nicely!  keep the pictures coming.  I started my layout in February 2001, the same weekend of the Daytona 500.  It took me 15 years to "finish".   I think its the journey that makes this hobby special.   I will be watching the race this Sunday and praying for a safe race.

That is looking like major progress. I like how you have all kinds of switches everywhere leading to a nice selection of operating accessories!!

I love having spur tracks and operating accessories....however, I must be honest. I overloaded the space with track and switches and have subsequently removed one passing track a few switches. In my eagerness to maximize track, I forgot how much I enjoy scenery........too much track takes up real estate better suited to scenic details.......I suspect others have fallen into that trap.....

Peter, there are some hard choices to make in building a layout, and what you have mentioned is one of them.

Your abundance of switches may enable you to do some interesting switching operations while running your trains. On the other hand, fewer switches may enable you to have more beautiful scenery as you have stated. Same is true in choosing between more or fewer accessories.

I sometimes think in certain parts of my layout, I may have cluttered it with too many switches and accessories.
