There is a National Railway Historical Society Convention in June that looks interesting.

While not model trains there will be some rare mileage steam trips and many other interesting events.

Some sort of model rail show around this time and location would be a handy extra event to attend!

Any model rail layouts or stores in the area??

In Cedar Rapids there is Box Kar Hobbies that is a little of everything and not alot of one thing.

In Cedar Falls, north of Waterloo is Caboose Stop Hobbies which (for me) is the train Mecca.  All MTH, LIonel etc trains of 2, 3 rail and HO.  Worth a drive and spend time.

In Dubuque is Cathy's Treasure that is an antique store with some MTH and Lionel trains in store back.

In Urbandale (near Des Moines) is Hobby Haven that has alot of MTH and Lionel and RC stuff.

Not sure what is available on western side of Iowa.  (lived in Iowa for 35+ years and not ventured much past DesMoines.)
