Bought several Legacy Lionel AF locos on Ebay and they don't behave as well as O gauge Legacy locos do in conventional mode. Basically they run too slow except for the 2-8-2 which run fast. If I get the Cab-1L/Base-1L combo I can run the Legacy locos and the LionChief+. But what about original AF locos? Can I just disconnect the third wire from the track when I want to run the AF engines?

Leave the wire from the Legacy connected for original American Flyer. It does not affect operation. Legacy supplies a radio signal to the track for Legacy products. It will not affect earlier Gilbert or Lionel AF products.
Thanks Roundhouse Bill.
What about the MTH F7 I have ordered. MTH locos are barely compatible with newer Lionel transformers and the one I am using is powered by a 135 powered brick/ with controller which I purchased new more than 10 years ago? Think this may be a problem.
I have no problems with conventional operation of AF Legacy engines nor the MTH F7's when using Lionel transformers, post war as well as modern.
Thanks Chuck K for the information. Looks like Lionel is going to make the Legacy Berkshire in 2020 with possibly the best detail for a non brass steamer in a long time.

They might. This is 3rd catalogue with them. First time it was cancelled. Then reappeared at a higher price. At this point there are not enough pre-orders for it to proceed, so hopefully more orders will come in.
On the Lionel Facebook presentation it was said that the Legacy Berk would be produced for sure. But very few over the amount ordered. The deadline for orders is the end of March.
I just preordered a second Legacy Berk. When the Legacy version was cancelled the first time I bought a FlyerChief version and had it converted to TMCC so I could run it with Legacy. I do not see that as a reason to not order the nicer Legacy version of the engines.
NS1001, I run conventional Flyer engines with my Cab 1-L, to increase the fun also purchase the Powermaster, with this you can run your conventiol Flyer from your Cab1-L remote.

Set up the Legacy controls on my new S gauge layout. Running a MKT PA1 and seems to have most of the features that O gauge has. Speaker quality not as good - just glad Lionel is help keeping S gauge alive.
