I have a Lionel 783 (6-8406) and I was thinking about putting a Lionel 6-18056 Hudson motor in it. The 18056 was converted to a can motor so it is a spare. Is it a better motor or essentially the same but with the addition of capacitors? If I do try it, do I need to remove the capacitors?
I've read about the 783 and it's occasional poor performance with magnet rubs (?) but I thought I'd at least ask.

The caps are non polarized used to reduce brush noise to the TMCC board. They don't have to be removed. No idea how the two motors compare otherwise.

I wouldn't bother with the swap. The motors are essentially the same except for the capacitors which is to help reduce electrical noise interfering with TMCC as Pete stated. No need to remove (or keep) the caps if you do switch.
Thanks. It was at one time rebuilt by a Bob Hannon and it does have the new armature in it, but I wasn't sure if the 18056's would be even better than a rebuilt 8406 motor.
