Recently the current managment team from Lionel payed me a visit. Two car loads of staff arrived at our store to discuss our concerns and ideas for the future. Howard, Mike, Chris, Bob, Bill and Rich (Did I forget anyone?) listened as my staff and myself "vented" about the current problems. I must say I was deeply impressed with their concerns about the company, our business and the future. We came to many of the same conclusions and we talked about solutions that will turn the market around and grow it again. I'm not going to share everything with you that we spoke about but here are some things I can share.
Some of you may remember my "Track giveaway" that I proposed years ago first to Gary M and then Jerry C. In a nutshell. Starter sets would come with a sticker "Free Track" or a slip inside offering 2 free pcs. of track to the purchaser for stopping in person to the local dealers on the enclosed list. Either Lionel or the dealer (On a 50/50 deal) would give the purchaser 2 free pcs. of track. That would drive Internet, Big Box and specl. stores customers into the local hobby/train store. A win/win for Lionel and the local dealer!
Another idea is the expansion of Thomas along the lines of the "Wooden Line". In that it was more interactive and playful. Right now we only have Thomas products that run around in circles. We need stations and more important "activation tracks" that will make things operat or do things. (Not as exspensive as the new Fast Trak sections but more afforable. We want to "Nurture" a childs creativity and hopefuly go on to real Model Railroading. Just look at the wooden trains and see how creative the designers are.
Battletrain, I know some of you are not for it but you have to imbrace the future. The next logical step is a RTR train set with a game supplied coupon that they can use to purchase.
These are just a few of my ideas they we talked about. We also talked about better comunication and that is well under way with us dealers. The web site will under go a change and we will see more interaction there. We also talked about POP supplies, Promotions and a better shipping sked. Remember, these guys are only on the job about 7 months and change is slow. Give them some time.
Let me know your thoughts? Or better yet let them read it here....and they do! Charlie...
