I just realized I had this car in a set I hadn't opened yet. This car was the "headliner" in this set of three Wellspring-era PW reissues from Lionel that also included 6464-350 MKT & 6464-400 B&O boxcars. These sets are quite nice as they let a new generation enjoy PW 027 6464-series boxcars with modern easy-rolling sprung die cast trucks.

Heaven help you, though, if you break a plastic coupler armature on one of these early-Wellspring trucks; it cannot be easily replaced as the die-cast truck sides are riveted to the bolster. Drilling out the rivet and replacing with a screw and nut is a MASSIVE pain; you might as well replace the whole truck. Wellspring trucks use diecast armature plates now which are much better.

Thanks for that info. I like putting loads into my boxcars, and found that load for sale but it seems pricey (IMHO). Perhaps an entire old used car would be cheaper, but I couldn’t figure out what Lionel model it was. Without too much effort would you happen to know what it is?

Happy Boxcar Sunday, I'll start this week off with a Weaver Illinois Central.

Photos show two Atlas O boxcars – Maine Central single-sheathed wood car #36123 and PSRX wood refrigerated car #1006 – pulled by Boston & Albany #53 - a Lionel model of a USRA 0-8-0 switcher. At the tail end is Boston & Albany wood caboose #1299 by MTH.

A new boxcar will be arriving on my layout this week, so I will have something different to post next week.

Nice start Dave! As I was walking down the side of the layout to get the two cars I wanted, this car jumped out at me. I thought that this would be an appropriate tribute to the remembrance of 911.

My contribution for this week is two Western Pacific boxcars ... two birds of  a different feather if you will .. lol!

This WP boxcar is by K line.  The lettering and graphics are crisp.  I like the silver feather.  The separately applied parts are done nicely even the brakeman's grab irons.

Here is a Weaver version of a WP boxcar.  Nicely applied separate parts such as the ladders and catwalk.  Brakeman's grab irons are molded into the body of the car.  Graphics are nicely done, however not as crips at the K line, which does not bother me at all.  This car has a coat of dulcote applied.

K-line Boxcar from April 13th 1993, It's a girl.  My daughter had a daughter last year the only thing I could find was a hopper, time to turn the rolling stock to the owners. God Speed All, Keep America Free!

Well here is my contribution this Sunday...I got to go to a train show yesterday !! YEA - one of very few we have in our area.  A TCA show that was really nice 170 tables so lots of vendors.  The attendence seemed pretty sparse however but we had 2 "kids" operating layouts, one Thomas and the other a starter freight but both with button activated accessories to provide action and lights and they were packed with kids all day. Anyway its now late afternoon and I am finally done preparing for my class on Monday so here is my boxcar.

Its a Menards box car with the Menards logo .  Lots of color and the color scheme alternates colors on the roof, roof hatches, ladders, ends and door guides.  Lots of detail / color  in the printing as well .  A little light weight but it tracks well on my simple layout.   From 2019.

Not sure who this dude is supposed to be (Mr. Menard?) but it looks like he is having fun!

Photos and video show Boston & Maine RS-3 #1506 on my 10’-by-5’ model railroad pulling two cars that carried milk from Vermont to Boston on the B&M Railroad – Brookside Fresh Milk MTC #1835 (Bellows Falls Creamery) by Atlas O and Hood’s Milk GARE #819 by Crown Model Products. At my house, we still drink Hood’s Milk.

I’ve posted the Brookside car on Boxcar Sunday before but the Hood’s Milk car is a new acquisition from forum sponsor Public Delivery Track. I now have three milk cars to put into a milk train.

As I understand it, milk from northern New York State and Vermont were brought to Rutland on the Rutland Railroad where some trains took it south to the New York Central Railroad at Chatham, New York and then to New York City, while others went to Bellows Falls, Vermont and then to Boston on the B&M. Cars such as  Brookside Fresh Milk MTC #1835 apparently went from Bellows Falls Creamery to First National Stores around Boston, and Hood’s Milk cars likely also went to the Boston area where Hood’s Milk had, and still has, its headquarters.

I bought this Lionel 17282 on eBay, the seller was Trainz. It was listed as slightly used, but if it was the previous owner must have worn gloves. It’s perfect and was less than $32!  Besides having a lot of detail, it has a route map and auto frame load.  This car is still listed on the Lionel store website and was built in 2004. I look at eBay for prices on cars I’m interested in, and most Lionel items have dozens to choose from. This car, at the time, only had 2. I don’t understand that.

Well I have a new "collectable" boxcar today, at least for me.  I love to collect Lionel's 0-27 (sometimes erroneously referred to as "plug door") boxcars.  As Lionel's least expensive boxcars these were usually reserved for either starter sets, low end sets, or special runs for private clients (and often put into special sets for them).  As such they can be difficult to find as the runs were often limited and as low end priced items they were often disposed of by owners.  I do know that others, @pennsyfan, for instance, have posted some of his collectable ones so I am hoping others may be interested as well.  

This is a relatively new car, fashioned for the client True Value hardware on the occasion of their 40th anniversary.  True Value has been a client for boxcars before as I have 2 other, non-anniversary cars in my collection.  This one was offered in 1988.  I encountered it at a local train show and it was NIB and I admit I had not seen it before.  These little gals can be hard to uncover as they never had much advertising, at least in later years, and rarely got into the catalog.

Thanks for getting us rolling Dave!   Here are my boxcars for this fine Sunday!  Featuring The Milwaukee Road box cars fleet of the Free State Junction Railway.

This is a Weaver model. MWR number 25014 ...   Nicely done as is Weaver's as is the standard for Weaver.  I gave this car a coat of Dulcote.

This is also a Weaver model.  MWR 30130.  This one also received a coating of Dulcote.   I bought both of these Weaver cars off the Bay for a fabulous price for the pair.  I'm never one to refuse a good deal .. lol!

This one is a K line model.  It has great separately applied details such as roof walk and side ladders. I'm not sure what "LDR" means.  Does anyone know?   I bought this car at a train show but don't remember if it was York or the Great Scale Show in TImonium, Md.  At any rate it's a great looking car and I'm grateful to have it in my fleet!
