I have a nice size layout with 4 major loops (2 on the lower level and 2 on the upper level) the lower level is powered by a Z-400 and the upper by an old ZW. I use both a DCS control system and a Legacy control system. The two control systems are cross connected via the ground from each transformer. Also I use a DM TMC Buffer V1.1 connected to one track on both levels. Power flows to all loops via the TIU. The lower level has the fixed outputs and the upper level the variable outputs. I usually set the output to 17 to 19 volts. It is my understanding that the TMC/Legacy engines will not activate until you address them via CAB2 via the startup command. On both levels the TMC engines light up (6-28074 2-10-4 T-1 TMCC (upper level)) and the (6-38058 2-8-8-2 H-7 TMCC (lower level) and you do not need to activate them their ready go. I do not think this is normal operation. Can you confirm that this is normal operation when the systems are cross connected via the ground? If not how do I fix it.

Do they just light up, or do you get idle sounds too?
Tmcc locomotives will light up as soon as the track is powered . This is normal.
When the locos are addressed the sound will start.
Any locomotive from MTH or Lionel will respond to a throttle command regardless whether they are “started up”.
As Rick pointed out the lights will come on but engine will remain silent.
As long as you have the Legacy connected to the black terminal for both tracks, the TMCC will run, using Dales Buffer, route the Legacy to the buffer, then to the black terminal on each output of the Z 4000. If your Legacy base is buried behind anything, you may want to use a larger antenna.
Note that sometimes on some layouts you need to power up the Legacy base (and TMCC Buffer if you're using one) first and then power the track on.
If you do that, newer Legacy locomotives should stay dark and silent. Older modular board Legacy and TMCC locomotives will remain silent, but the lights will come on.
Thanks everyone and it appears that I need to power up the Legacy System first in order everything to work right. I guess I have the atypical layout but its good to know I won't have to change the power supply setup, just turn on the Legacy System first.
I've had several customers with the same issue. One guy rigged a timer to delay his transformer power for a couple seconds after his command base turned on. That way he had one switch that did it all.
Now that I understand what you are saying, my F7s from about a year or 2 ago come up with the sound on and somewhat confused if I don't wait for the Legacy base to boot. Never had that issue before.
Some stuff jumps the gun on coming up in conventional and powering the base up with the transformer, sometimes the base loses the race.
John that is what you told me in another thread several months ago and I have never had an issue since. But after reading what people were saying here I was hesitant to say that. Thank You for helping me and once again coming through for Forum Members.
