Well, after two, maybe three years  of waiting and wondering if they ever would be made, I finally received the Golden Gate 54ft reefers. I was looking around JD's Trains site, since he is taking over for Bob and AM hobbies. There they were, the Golden Gate 54ft reefers were availible! In spite of the steep price I went ahead and ordered a NYC and REA Reefer. They arrived today.  Here are a few quick pictures.

Hope to see many of you at the TCA convention in Atlanta. The Casey Jones High Railers will be there with our modular layout. Looks like I will be running an IC Reefer train!

Have a good weekend

Richard

Steep price?!?!?  They list for only $79.95, which is right in the ball park with Weaver's B&O wagon top box cars and their current PRR covered hoppers.

You should have seen the price on the REA express cars previously imported by Sunset/3rd Rail some years ago. Those where brass and over $250 each, as I recall!

These are spectacular cars from GGD, and are a real good by at UNDER $80 after discounts!

I think there is a prototype of the REA 54ft reefer at the museum in Golden Colorado. I will add a picture of it here tonigh.

Well guys we will just have to agree to disagree on pricing. I purchased two of the Weaver B&O round roof box cars and two of the new Weaver covered hoppers, and yes they were close to the same price point as the Golden Gate reefer. Yes, I remember the Sunset brass model, but come on, that is the best "apples and oranges" comparison I have heard in a while.

The two Atlas cars were aroud $59.

I am willing to pay a little  more when a new prototype is offered, such as the Golden Gate cars, and the car or engine is truly something new and different. I love Atlas, but sadly I think that with a very few exceptions Atlas has fallen into a rut of applying new paint jobs and car numbers to some vey fine freight car models in the masters line.

However, in general the pricing for everything in our hobby continues to increase. This concerns me when I look around and there are  fewer and fewer young people joining us in this diversion from reality otherwise known as a hobby.

Thanks for looking at the pictures, have a great weekend, and hope to see some of you in Atlanta.

Take care,

Richard

Wow Chuck!

Has it been 5 years since the first Atlas 53 ft wood reefers cane out? I think they were in the $60 - $65 price range at AM Hobbies, but I have selpt since then and can not recall for sure. I have two of the REA cars and one Frisco car. I run them in express trains and as head end cars on my passenger trains.

What ever the price, both the Golden Gate and Atlas cars are very nice example of steam era rossing stock. I wish Atlas would use more of those metal hand rails, grab irons and stirups. I have to keep a supply of CA glue on hand for the eventual repairs one must deal with when running Atlas O scale cars. However, the atlas cars are 100% more durable then their Inter Mountain ancestors.

RJL,

We will miss Bob and AM Hobbies, but JD appears to be stepping up to the plate and taking care of us refugee customers. I received an email from JD last week confirming all my pre orders with AM Hobbies. Wow, I forgot how much I had pre ordered from AM Hobbies.  At least all of it will not come in at once, I hope.

And here is one more shamless plug for the Casey Jones High Railers. We will be set up at the TCA convention this week in Atlanta. the modular layout will be up and running Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I hope to see some of the folks here on the OGR Forum. Be sure and  come by the display and say HI.

Richard
