Hah, wait til David gets aload of the $1500 price tag!

Did they actually talk about price on the podcast?  Or did you see an early catalog?

I'm tired of harping on Lionel for their prices, 'cause they're obviously not listening.  But if they expect folks to pay $1500 for a light Mike, they're smoking some serious stuff in the back offices -- considering I bought TWO heavy Mikes from the last production run at roughly $850 each when dealers had discount sales.

Bottom line... Lionel is just making it SUPER easy for folks to skip the newly catalog'd items and look elsewhere.  I just saw a Lionel Legacy Y6b for $1450 at Henning's Trains, and end-of-year dealer sales had an MTH GN Z-6 Challenger WITH 5 boxcars AND a nice caboose in a set for less than $1375 at several dealers.

$1500 for a ho-hum, basic light Mike???    Not!!!

So that's it for me on this stuff.  I'm officially turning over my market analysis baton to the next soul who wants to run with it.  I'm clearly on a different road than Lionel these days, and 2017 will be a huge layout-building year for me anyway.  More on that soon!

Ok, we've established Light Mikes.

Any word on other stuff?  Thanks.

The following are some of the items which will be in the catalog tomorrow...

Light Mikes, AC9's, SD40's, SD60Ms, S2 Electrics, mill gondolas AND some newly tooled Amtrak passenger cars including American View

Thanks, Big John. Looking forward to seeing it all tomorrow.

Listening more to the podcast, Derek, I'm so SO happy to hear that the 587 will be getting the attention it has been longing for years. Yeah, I get this might be a small thing to most, but I've been a HUGE 587 fan since a child. So, thank you Ryan and all the rest at Lionel for giving this engine a chance, and I definitely look forward to seeing it in the catalog tomorrow.

Just a tongue in cheek guess at MSRP David, but probably  not entirely out of the realm of possibility as a selling price.

Keep in mind, the yet to be delivered K4's with the long tender are $400 more than the first run......certainly that berk tender could raise the price of the NKP version at the very least

On a side note, the large tender is a unique idea especially for the NKP. However, like the K4 these locos are more desirable to the many folks with smaller layouts when in there "as built" states.......but then theres no way anyone would buy the newer K4 with the standard tender for $400 more.

I don't think those jumbo tenders do any favors for the small can motors Lionel is using in these locos either.

I still have a hunch Lionel is going after big ticket items to raise the bottom line.

I still see  the heavy Mikes in stock at many dealers for $1099-$1199.

Count me in on the Light Mikado’s as well.

The detailing on the past Mikado’s has been sparse, so I am hopeful that Lionel can figure out how to add additional “add-on” or road specific details.

As for cost, why anyone thinks that prices will remain the same is beyond me. The exact same thing from the same manufacture will cost more today than it did last year and will cost more next year than it did today. It’s really not that hard.

The company I work for is down to a one month window for active quotes on machined products, absolutely no stability in pricing… just the way it is folks. If it is too much money, not enough value, not on your want list, then don’t buy.

Charlie

There isn't really anything else that's on my "want" list anymore with the exception of an Acela train set and a long past die-cast BSA ES44AC but the latter won't be happening unless I get lucky so any of those high end steamers or $650 diesels just aren't going to come to my layout. I'll buy a 3rd Rail first before I pop that much on a diesel or steamer that's got the generic look

I thought the detailing on the past Light Mikados was pretty good. This is my Great Northern.2017-01-24 0012017-01-24 0022017-01-24 003

Well, I stand corrected. For some reason your image shows more detail then I remember when I was looking for a unit to repaint.

Might be worth a visit to see if there are any around... like I need another project for my workbench.

Thanks for posting.

...

The detail level on the last run of heavy Mikes was very acceptable for a die-cast product with add-on details.  They are excellent runners too, and I'm happy with my GN and NYC models.  The fact that I got mine for under $900 makes me wonder what the real dealer cost is for these.  Unless they were just looking for cash infusion at the time.

Remember, with these being BTO... Lionel already grabs their piece of the action when dealers take delivery.  Beyond that point, it's not Lionel's problem if dealers still have stuff sitting in inventory 2 or 3 years later.  The dealers are the ones taking the hit when large discounts are needed to move the stuff.

Derek I guess you should've got it in writing.

Well Marty, I was just commenting on the heavy Mikes being a nice locomotive that I was lucky enough to get at some very aggressive dealer prices.  You're on your own tomorrow when the 2017 catalogs are released.  But I'm sure you can handle it!

Rest assured, there will be some very talented forum members here who take notice of prices and pricing trends.  Count on it.
