I am getting ready to convert my scale trains to Kadees using the new 700 series couplers. I have a number of MTH and Lionel 18" heavyweights produced in the last decade.

Should I be considering any of the offset shank models (742 or 747) or will the straight shank couplers pretty much work if they are body mounted?

For York attendees, are there dealers that might stock these couplers?

Only the Kadee O Scale coupler height gauge will be able to answer that question for you. My suggestion would be to stay with the standard coupler head configuration, and shim the coupler box down to the correct height, according to the gauge. You may also consider the new "long shank" 700 series couplers for your passenger cars.

As far as the "off-set head" couplers, I am waiting to use those on the front of some steam locomotive models, where it has been difficult to shim the coupler box, and still match the coupler height gauge.

If Jeff Dobslaw, of JD's Trains, (out of St Louis, MO) attends York, he will definitely have the new Kadee 700 series couplers. You might call him in order to make sure, however  (314) 409-4451.
