I thought PS3 engines were supposed to have LED lights. When I opened the boiler of my new red 400e, I noticed that there was a regular light bulb in there. Hmmmm.

My red Presidents special has LED's. What kind of bulb do you have for the fire box glow?
I did not open the boiler front on mine, but the bulb under the firebox is a conventional light bulb.
The being said, the marker lights on the boiler front are brighter than my other 400E's, so I need to take a look to see if there is anything different in there!
It is now packed for Cal Stewart next month, so I won't be able to get to it easily, anytime soon!
My bad...from the red 400e instruction book
"Even though the headlight bulb looks like an incandescent lamp, it is
not. Replacing the Screw Base Globe type LED with an incandescent bulb will
cause damage to the PS3.0 circuit board"

ALWAYS pays to read those pesky owner's manuals!
Chris, I'm confused about your answer here. I've put LED's in a significant number of standard PS/2 locomotives, both 5V and 3V boards, it's never been any kind of issue. They work well and look a bunch better than the wimpy bulbs as a rule, especially for headlights.
This is getting more interesting.
I will have to read that manual and look at the locomotive more closely!
RAK,
How about a few photos of the Red Comet cars?

Well John; It only happened once when I put in a screw in LED in one of my steamers. Maybe it was just a coincidence but the 3V board got damaged. Maybe the bulb had nothing to do with it but needless to say I was not going to try again!
OK, I wondered what happened. Perhaps the screw-in ones have something that I don't realize. If you short that light output, that will cook the FET, maybe something like that happened? I'm real careful not to let that happen.
wow,I just unpacked my af presidents ps3 loco, no light bulbs ,or manual for that matter will call mth on mon or tue, all I can so far is wow,,what a set..thanks sidetrack !
