Yesterday, I had the opportunity to further explore the ex-PRR bridge across the Ohio River between Steubenville, OH and Weirton, WV.
These first 8 photos were taken from the West Virginia side of the river.
A shot of the arch from the downstream side.
Another photo of the arch.
This is a photo from atop the arch. Note where the 2nd track was removed as well as the stone and the iron bars holding the stones together. Just behind me (on the bridge) is mile-marker 42. That is PRR Panhandle mile marker 42 (due east in Pittsburgh, just beyond the post office is the official start of the Panhandle).
On the downstream side of the arch is the little backwater where I took many of the first expedition's photos.
In front of me is the grated walkway to the main span. It is very solid.
Despite the rust, the main span appears solid and in pretty good shape. This bridge still carries trains, although they are pretty rare these days.
Only to someone obsessed with this bridge does this look like the stairway to heaven. No, I didn't. The view of the water rushing past 60+ feet below (quite a current yesterday) was quite enough, thank you.
And finally from the Ohio side, "Look Ma, no hand rail". The handrail has become disconnected from the bridge right at the point where some poor soul might need it to descend.
