I just purchased an MTH DDA40X (20-2432-1).  When running it on level track with 11 passenger cars behind, the coupler has opened three times in the span of 10 minutes.  I think that I have heard it snap open, as though the rear coupler was actuated by the remote, but am not sure.

1. Can this be electrical?  I cannot see where the wiring leading to the rear coupler is chafing (shorting) leading to the coupler being commanded to open.

2. Nothing was being actuated by the remote when the coupler opened, so I'm assuming I didn't accidentally cause this.

3. I assume that the coupler can be weak enough when closed that it can pop open from the weight of the cars behind it.  Is there an adjustment?  Might I just need to lubricate the coupler so that it closes and latches completely?

Thanks in advance.  Rick

If it is under warranty, bring it to a service dealer if possible, and let them check it out. You need to isolate the problem to either an electrical cause, or mechanical one. With power off and the loco coupled to a train, giggle the loco back and forth to see if the coupler opens under mechanical stress. If not, remove the shell and disconnect the coil coupler wire from the board. If the coupler still opens, it is a mechanical problem.
