Hi

I have a shelf layout in my summerhouse, here in the UK, (Not that we get much sun) I used IKEA floating shelf around the back side of the room. Its only a simple two track there and back using Lionel fast track, no points [oops! switches, your phraseology] outer track is 036 inner 054 I have can run a couple of my large collection at a time. Check out my youtube channel. {ernie stammers} sorry I do not have a complete photo  I just tried to upload a video. (didn't work except for this one, its to do with file size)

Here is a 30" wide by 24' long modular layout idea that I am playing with.  Just for fun.  Could be used as a shelf layout.  Based on three 30" X 8' modules.   The modules join two tracks at each end, using 4.5" track sections butting-together at each module joint.   Using Fastrack.  Mostly O-60 switches.

I really like that Idea Ken, I dare say I could put wider shelves in with out upsetting my wife, When I put the Summerhouse up and furnished it all out, Electrics etc. my wife said it was too nice to have trains in, which was its original intention, but relented when I said about a shelf layout. the size of the summer house is 11ft x12ft so taking account of windows I managed to get a 12ftx 11ftx 5ft length of shelving. I will take some photos and post them up but it is still work in progress. I use the lionel IR sensors to switch lights etc, and have a couple of sensor tracks installed, but will be adding more. the trouble is my Reading T1 just about gets moving and then has to stop, it is pulling three reefer trucks with sound and a couple of others and a caboose. (we call them guards vans)

I love shelf layouts...

An MTH Railking F-3 ABA.  Always my favorite engines.  I have 4 of them.  Three run on my table layout.

This is the widest board, 11 1/2 inches and three tracks, because there is a long spur in the back that leads to a small yard.

The yard is three 10 X 8's glued and doweled, with two sidings.

It was truly a bear to get the yard all together, wired, and working.  Getting it all up there in one piece was almost as hard.

MTH Conrail (my only PS2) and a New Haven Premier PS3 ABA.

I love the colors on the NH cars.

This shows the underside of the 10 X 8's.  Sanded and sealed three times to make them look like part of the boxed beams.

The lights and wiring are all easily hidden between the inside track and backdrop.  I didn't want any wires to be seen underneath.

Table layouts are also very cool, but you can't have happy hours, play poker, and run all these trains at the same time.  With the shelf layout and DCS, all you do is start 'em up and watch 'em go.   You still have to keep an eye on them if you're running four trains on two tracks.  The boys love watching them go by...
