Hello,

I am working on a 3RS train to go with my Atlas Southern GP35 that was converted to 3RS. What I need is a Southern Railway caboose to end the train. I have not seen any that looked scale, except those from Lionel a few years ago that can possibly be converted. I am asking those who model Southern in 3RS (or maybe 2RS) if they have any models that were made or converted for their layout. David Friedlander was looking into making a Southern B/W caboose a few years back, but never heard anything more.

Any help appreciated.

Larry, this is Malcolm's picture of the four-window wooden I recently bought form him.

Years back I bought both the red and brown K-Line Southern Bay windows.  As I recall they are so so close.  I intended to make some minor changes that would not require major work.

Also some company did made brass kits that were spot on.  Lane has/had one that he ran at Rich's (Trains Limited) on South Blvd in Charlotte.  Don't recall name of company.  I don't have any contact info for him, but see him at shows.

Larry.

You could go with the Atlas bay window Southern caboose, No. 0737 in 3 rail and 0787 in 2 rail.

If it is too easy to get an Atlas caboose to go with your Atlas geep there are other options.

K-Line made the  K-612-2012 Southern bay window caboose.

Lionel used the same tooling for the K-Line by Lionel 6-22282 caboose.

Lionel used their own very nice Standard O tooling for the 6-17663 caboose from 2004 Volune 2.  It has roller bearing trucks with rotating caps.

MTH has made several scale Southern bay window cabooses in Rail King and Premier.  The 20-91045 goes back to 2001.

The 30-77113 appeared in 2006 volume 2.

And the 30-77210 was in 2012 Volume 2.  It shipped less than a year ago and several shops show it in stock on the MTH product locator.

There are plenty of O scale trains out there.  Sometimes it takes using the manufacturers search feature to find out what has been made.  Once you know what to look for it shouldn't take too long to find a car that meets your needs.

The stack was bent over from hitting something. That particular Caboose was parked on a siding at one of Cone Mills Weaving Plants in Reidsville, N.C. I visited that Plant[four story Plant not shown in the photo] many times during the 1950s-60s. That is the Plant manager's '53 Desoto parked next to the office[white building].

A lot of cotton and coal went inbound on the plant's 3 sidings. Khaki and Corduroy outbound.

The huge American Tobacco Lucky Strike Cigarette Plant is behind the camera and across the Southern mainline to Washington. Reidsville was a favorite Southern Ry photo op site.
