Thoughts on these 2 plans?

The 2 plans below were designed in Atlas RTS. I plan on using Gargraves flex and switches. Please disregard sections that are slightly off. There will be an odd looking curve or two as well. I did my best with limited experience with the software. This at least gives me a good idea of the look and feel. I'm thinking there needs to be a certain degree of elevated track to get things off the flat plane, but I am not totally convinced yet.

1st one
If I do an elevated portion, I was thinking that the highest I would need to rise could possibly be 7.5" max. I would use runs up and down of at least 20' to give me a grade of 3.125%. Does this grade sound acceptable? Any rise of less than 7.5" would be less than 3.125%, this gives me some room to play with.




The second one I saw some time ago and saved a copy of it (thanks in advance to the creator). I thought this would be a good one some day. It leaves room around the right center area for a transfer table or some type of scenery.




Any changes you would make?

I like the 2nd bottom design as Will says it has larger curves allowing you to run larger engines if you so choose. I might also eliminate the reverse loop and add a 2nd loop/main line and put in a larger yard if you eliminate the reverse loop. The yard tracks could go diagonal into your 8'x23' layout. Lots of possibilities.

I like the bottom version best but thinking perhaps the left side inner loop to join the top track by flipping it's switch and eliminating the inside loop on the right side.

This will give you a little bit longer yard, maybe a industry, scenery etc.

You could consider compenstating for my changes by adding a "Saw By" over lap siding to the bottom of the table so that one of your tracks can switch yard, make and break trains undisturbed by the main.

I like the top one best only because I want to have an elevated portion of track.

I do like Lee's comments about the second plan. I would like to somehow incorporate elevated track into the second plan. Maybe I can figure out a way to add aditional track that is elevated. I'm terrible at this part of mapping it out. I'm itching to build.
