I just received Lionel's American Flyer catalog. I am not an S-gauger, I'm an O-gauger. The reason I'm here though is because in the catalog some of the engines and freight cars were designated at traditional S-gauge. I always thought that S-gauge was an honest 1/64 scale. Am I misinformed? What is the true story about S-gauge?

S gauge has always been scale sized, not all over the board like O gauge.
The "traditional" moniker probably means that the cars were made using the original molds and with the original level of molded in details.
Yeah, and without scale size wheels or Kadee couplers.
As a general statement, American Flyer model trains have always been correctly sized with regard to overall length, width and height. The word "traditional" refers to a level of detailing typical of the 1950s trains by the A.C.Gilbert company. The word "scale" refers to a much improved level of detailing now being offered by Lionel. In both cases, the models have the correct overall size and, as Ross Perot likes to say, "the difference is in the details."
