I recall reading a story many years ago about predecessor line Mason City & Clear Lake and was instantly fascinated.  Then I discovered engine #50 used to run just a few miles from me in Virginia.

I once backpoled Shoreline's Toronto Peter Witt (single-ended car) up a yard ladder to the other end of the carbarn area. With no one to spot for me, I got the idea to watch the shadow of the car's pole (it was late afternoon) to make sure it's wheel went the right way at each frog. At other times, I assisted with backing the subway cars by holding the rope and pulling in the direction we wanted to go at each frog. Both instances were very low-speed maneuvers though.
