Given the size of my train room, and the windows, doorways, and computer desk, I have zeroed-in on a general size and shape of the layout that seems best.   But now I have come up with two attractive roughly 5X12 layouts, each of which have great features.   I have been accumulating track and will soon need a final decision on the track plan.

Each layout has good features, both have an O-60 outer loop and supports two trains with some interesting operation and running variety.  One is more complex in terms of grades, the other should be easier to construct.  #1 has a loop of On30; #2 has a back-and-forth on relays point-to-point On30.

I would appreciate your insight and opinion about which is the better layout - thanks in advance!

Hey Ken,

Will those layouts export to train simulator?

I find that using the simulator provides me with a final verdict on a track design. If it's a fun and interesting run on the simulator, it will be when built.

I watch the elapsed time. How long does it take to do everything once?

20 minutes or more is a good time for play value.

I like the Dakota Western.

Sidebar: I was reading on the Anyrail site that it has a 3D feature. Can you show the 3D of the Dakota and capture an image with the Windows snip tool?

I like the Dakota because I can see 3 trains running unattended with command operation. Then you can take individual control of one and drop off and pick up.

Careful placement of sensor tracks, uncoupler tracks and Legacy could animate an entire scenario.

Even using conventional operation the two O trains could run unattended. The On30 could be automated with Azatrax or other systems. or a Legacy Shay and some GG or Atlas track for an O logger train.

It also appears to be a simpler build, using more terrain. The terrain placement also acts as a scenic divide.

I suppose the simple answer is that the Dakota Western appears to be more fun.

I may copy it into SCARM for some 3D and a sim. Busy this PM.
