What I want to know (sort of a curiosity question) is how many of you who own this engine have had the flashing error notice (3 flashes) in the cab?  According to the owner's manual, that means there is trouble with the smoke generator.  Also, according to the manual, you can do only 3 resets.  After that, it's back to Lionel for repair.  And wouldn't you know it, my one year warranty expired in Jan?  I got 3 resets which fixed the problem, but of course, only temporarily.  I suspect it will be quite expensive to have it fixed, plus added shipping costs.  I could ignore the smoke issue and continue to operate it.  Other control features appear to work.

Vision line items come with a 2 year warranty that includes return shipping. These are extra "perks" that come from spending the extra money for VL stuff.

Click on the "service/repair question" heading here:  http://www.lionel.com/ContactUs/

Fill out the form with the necessary info,  and describe your problem. You should hear from Lionel by tommorrow.

The fault code is likely being caused by a faulty smoke unit fan motor, I as well as many others have had the same problem in other locos as well. It seems Lionel may have gotten a "bad batch" of smoke fan motors a couple of years ago. The smoke unit tests the fan when the loco is powered up, if it senses to much voltage draw it shuts the fan down and the cab light blinks.

Hi all,

Vision Line products come with a 2-year limited warranty. The only Vision Line products that have ever been shipped with electronics that feature the cab lamp flashing diagnostics is the Hudson & Centipede AA sets. All previous V/L products had modular Legacy electronics that did not feature the flashing cab lamp diagnostics.

As a part of the Vision Line limited warranty we will provide a prepaid shipping label should the product require a trip to Lionel service in Ohio. You MUST request an RA prior to sending a V/L or any other product for that matter back to Lionel for service.

Thank you,

Mike

Lionel

Thanks for your service!

And by "you" in my response, it was a generalization for all on the board. I hope you didn't think I meant you specifically.

I'm a veteran, so there would be no abuse by me.

I'm not sure yet, since Lionel has not responded to my request via their website, but there's a possibility my engine might fall into the "3 yr limit" on warranty based on date of manufacture.  I don't know how to read the serial # to determine date of manufacture.  But, didn't this model come out in 2010?  If it was made later in the year I will be o.k.

I received from Lionel an "RA" number for warranty service.  However, the instruction email indicated I will be paying the shipping cost. A previous poster on here said shipping was free on Vision Line products.  Being a veteran apparently has no impact either.

I'm trying to imagine how much shipping will cost with added insurance for a $1500.00 item.

Maybe I'll just live without smoke.

Did you ask for a prepaid shipping label from Lionel?

No.  However, based on Mike Reagan's posting above, I should not have had to ask.  Prepaid return shipping is part, if I understand correctly, of the Vision Line service while under warranty.  I did return an email with a copy of Mike's note above. We'll see what happens.

use this email and tell them it is a vision line do not assume anything.

this is an email I received from "talk to us" about using the website;

"If you sent the email through an automatic form on the lionelstore, this department does not handle those emails so I cannot tell you what they may be behind in. If this is regarding warranty work, repairs, or general troubleshooting, we can help you. Please send all correspondence regarding these kind of issues to talktous@lionel.com"

I recommend you call Lionel Customer Service (586-949-4100) directly, and let them know what the situation is.  The "RA" can be issued multiple times, so don't stress that point.  Once you are to the point in the conversation where they are telling you about shipping, tell them you are a Veteran, and at that point they should issue you a Prepaid Shipping Label.  The few times I have needed to send something in, they have been very accommodating when you request a shipping label.

I had the same issue with my VL Hudson. When I called customer service and mentioned I was active duty the return shipping label was e-mailed to me and I shipped it back via UPS at no cost to me. My Hudson came back a few weeks later and all is good with it now. While of course I wish my engine never developed this problem in the first place Lionel did a fantastic, and quick, job making it right again.  -Len
