I think coming up with a back story or a RR to model is the most difficult part for me. I just don't have enough real world experience to draw from. I want a layout that lends itself to some simple operating session. I will use TMCC. I would like a coal tipple and a few industries to drop and pick up cars. I want to try and scratchbuild all the buildings myself. I figure I have about 5 years to work in this room and house. I'm only interested in diesels and shorter ones at that, I have a C420 and have my eye on an RS11. Both are Lionel with TMCC. My nicer rolling stock is New Haven and I'll stick with that for now. I will have short trains. Maybe 8 cars max?

Here's a plan I really like posted to me by Bob Delbridge which was designed for him by Dave Hikel. I won't pretend to know Dave, but I think I've read other posts mention his name. It's nearly a perfect fit for my room. It makes my best idea look like a child's scribble. This is his design.

I made a few changes...

GG2 without closets

I can do a lot without disturbing the outside track. But maybe I've over-complicated it with my edits?

I need a runaround somewhere in there. I'm also curious what I could do with that vacant space on the protruding island. I wold like some grades but with my small space I figure the upper right of the outside track can peak to about 3" at most. What do you all think?

Who says you need a backstory or real RR to model?

This is backstory enough.  Just build what you want.

I've always been a huge fan of this plan and the revision you made makes it even better!  I'm hoping that one day I'll have room for this plan.  I've been trying to adapt it to Fastrack (I know there are some limitations to Fastrack but I like it).

I'm still mulling over the same general plan. Now I considering using one of the closets for a double reversing loop (insert proper term here). Have any of you built something arranged like this? Ignore the closet, I'm speaking of the reverse loop design. Did you have any issues? As stated previously I won't be using long locos and this would be mostly hidden. I would still keep the peninsula but use it for more industries. One downside is it's expensive way to save some real estate.

Tim,

Excellent to see that plan put to use!!!

I put a small downtown on my island, I have since taken the island down and presently have no WYE , but that'll be fixed soon:

On my present layout I added a small run-around at the top right corner on the inside track.  This plan also shows the future Wye and yard (my downtown is now at that 54" area):

It made all the difference in the world as far as moving cars to the siding at the bottom (where it shows 54" on the plan).

As far as those closets go, they can be fairly easy to take out if you're careful.  I recently removed a closet from an old bedroom to give my wife more space for her hobby.  Just be careful around the ceiling and don't poke any holes in it like I did.  Unless there's electrical wiring going thru it it shouldn't be a big chore, other than cleanup!

You have a lot of operational possibilities on your layout Bob. I can imagine how enjoyable that must be. The Wye and yard will be a welcome addition. What's stopping you from making that yard happen?

I built those closets. I know where every stud and wire are. But I don't think taking them out will be possible while keeping harmony with the wife. Poking holes is far enough for now.

What's stopping you from making that yard happen?

$$$, or the lack thereof.  I have to put tires and brakes on my Mini very soon and replace 2 windows upstairs.

while keeping harmony with the wife

Understandable .  The closet I took out was also one I had built, back in 1991-92.  I NEVER did put a door on it (couldn't find one to match our old house) and when she wanted to use the room for her hobbies she said "Why don't you rip out that ugly thing".  It's all about harmony

I'm pretty close I think to a finalized track plan. I'm betting I have to approach it with a certain expectation that plans and reality don't always mesh. I would welcome everyone's thoughts. I know there is a lot of experience on this forum. I've tried not to use tight curves on anything visible except in the yard and industry area.
