Just recently purchased a 1668 loco.  I noticed it only had a number board on one side. There are no slots on the other side for a number board. Is there a reason for this?

I know when I was looking for a 1668 I saw some of these on ebay, but they were always accompanied with WOW !!!!, LOOK,  FACTORY ERROR!!!!!. It appears it is much to common to be that significant, but I was just wondering if there was a reason?

The single number plate is a variation, that is documented in reference books.  The 1688 also has the same variation, with one number plate.  The 1668/1688/& 1588 all share the basic shell.  The 1588 was the clockwork version, which would have the right side only needing the keyhole, and no need for the number plate.  It's fair to assume that the 1668 & 1688 shells with only one number plate, started out as a 1588.
