Hi all, I'm new to this forum and looking for some history re: Lionels pre-war 263E Blue Comet sets. I like rehabbing older Lionel engines that have lost most of their value. I recently picked up a poor 263E Blue Comet set painted light blue w/ nickle trim. The set needs to be stripped down to bare metal and totally refinished. Does anyone have any history re: the baby blue 263E Blue Comet set? Was it produced in a different year than the darker blue sets? I cannot find any info. on the color variations between these sets. I like to bring these pieces back to their original state as close as possible, so even though I'm not a big fan of the lighter blue color, I'll restore it to it's original color nonetheless. Thanks in advance.

PWP,
I am not sure how many of the O Gauge Baby Blue 263E's were really produced, I have the original Lionel Gray 263E work train and actually I have personally never seen an early original Baby Blue 263E Comet passenger train, except in pictures. Once you restore this engine I would really like to see her, at least post some pictures.

Pre-War Paramedic,
Goodness!! I like the title but we gotta shorten it. (PWP?? OK for now)
How's your personal library? It's time to invest in a few "quality" reference guides. A good start would be, Bruce Greenberg's "Guide to Prewar Lionel Trains Vol.II". Be sure you find the hardback book and NOT the price guide. In this book you will find all O-Gauge variations with photographs. It does cover a few of the set variations.
I personally steer clear of guides by others. (my choice). I will locate my books on Lionel Prewar O-Gauge Sets. I will post the titles for you later on.
God's Blessings,

Great to hear you are going to bring the old Gal back to life! The sets were produced from 36-39. It was always painted the later "lighter" blue. To my knowledge there are no color variations in the set. Best of luck, and be sure to post some pics!
