Hello all, it's me again,

I relocated the hinges from the bottom to the top of my access panel. When lifting the panel I create about a quarter inch gap between the two tracks when the panel comes down again. Please look at my pictures and see if you can come up with some type of solution or is this gap acceptable. As noted before tree sections of track will be located coming across my access panel. I also added an overall picture of part of my layout.

Thanks again for your great help, Jerry

I think if you raise the hinges up so the hinge point is at the top of the track (some wood blocks the height of the track section should suffice) you can eliminate almost all of the gap and have the rails 'touch' (not for the purposes of making a good electrical contact).  At the other side of the panel, you may have to cut both the wood panel and the track at a slight angle so there is clearance as the panel and track swing up but the gap between the track sections is minimal when the panel is down.

Nice layout space - should be a lot of fun to work with/in.

Jerry, glad to see that you moved the hinges. If the barrel of the hinge is just slightly above the top of the rail the panel will lift without interference. I see that you are using tubular track. You can cut the track with a Dremel and have less than a1/8 inch gap. I used gargraves and cut both sides in the middle of the track . I it worked very well. Just fiddle with the track and you will get it to work.  Tstark

Guys,

I will be immediately shimming the hinges to the top of the rail to preclude the gaps that I have now. Thank you very very much for all your input. I have enclosed pictures of the layout as it stands now.. It is around 30 feet by 21 feet in one corner. I plan to do mainly coall and log and have tons of Lionel accessories that I plan to use. If any of you are in the Ann Arbor area of Michigan you can give me a call at 734 453 1809 and we can discuss trains. By the way I also plan to use TMCC command control along with my post war stuff.

Thank you very very much again, Jerry
