I have a number of MTH and Lionel engines purchased over the last 20 years.  My desire is to keep all of them in good operating condition and I realize that as an engine ages, it requires more maintenance than is listed in the owners manual.  Does anyone know of a good video that shows a more detailed maintenance of MTH or Lionel engine?  Specifically covering but not limited to the following areas: cleaning(removing the old grease) and lubrication the truck gears, checking wires for areas of wear/exposure, smoke unit cleaning and re-wicking, traction tires-checking and replacing, battery replacement/check.  The premise being that, "since I have the cover off, I might as well check the following".  The challenge I'm really looking to address is taking my Father's 15 year old MTH PS2 5v engines that hasn't been run in 3 years, giving them some TLC, and having each one perform well.  Oh, and yes, I do know to charge the battery before trying to run, thanks.

Additionally, do you have a "service list' that you use when working on your engines?

Thanks in advance for all who contribute.

Do not charge the battery on that 15 year old locomotive, throw it away.  Replace with the new green battery or BCR of your choice.  You know enough to charge a battery on an engine that has sat.  Many do not and many that do will give it a try stating the battery looked good.  Your idea is a good one.  The only problem I see is as follows.  It is hard enough to get people to read the book that comes with a locomotive.

My opinion would be to have one guy do the video.  That one guy should be Jim Barrett.  His word and knowledge is very respected in our numbers.

The late Don Hagar did an excellent DVD on servicing prewar Lionel Hudsons. DK

I can honestly say that I do not know of any DVD's like you're interested in. The only thing close would be the OGR Back Shop Series by our own Jim Barrett. In all twelve volumes there's very little in depth coverage of modern Lionel or MTH products. You would need to purchase all twelve just to obtain maybe twenty-minutes of usable material. That material would only skirt the fringe of material you're seeking.

You may want to sound-off in another post for any of the larger train clubs in your area. Many members of these clubs have the in depth knowledge you're seeking. IMHO Even if you had to drive under two hours for the meetings. The knowledge and friendships that you would gain would be worth the drive. I wish you the best of luck in your quest for knowledge.
