I have two locals.    One starts in Brownsville which is an online town.    The operator assembles the train with a coach or combine from the storage track and generally picks up an express car from the freight station.    it then heads north (timetable east) through Connellsvile and Scottdale picking up  a couple more express cars.    At Youngwood which is the big station on the line, it will switch out a couple express cars and pick up a couple.   Then it heads past the freight yard and on many pretend miles into Pittsburgh which is represented by staging tracks.

the other train orinates in Pittsburgh (made up in off line staging) with a coach or combine and 3 express cars.    It runs north (timetable west) on the layout to Youngwood and drops a couple express cars and picks up a couple.   It then goes to Scottdale and Connellsville seting out express cars at each freight station.    It ends up in Brownsville with one express car and the coach.   It puts the coach on the storage track and the express car at the freight station.   then it puts the loco in the one stall engine house.

If it is 1946, the locos on the 2 trains are G5 4-6-0 and a D16 4-4-0.    If it is 1963, the locos are an Alco RS3 and Alco RS1.    There are 2 trains, not one train representing both because the express car moves are different.

The reason the setouts and pickups at Youngwood are made is because there are two through passenger trains that will exchange a their express cars there.

I also run two local passenger trains on my PRR themed layout, soon to be three when I get an E6 Atlantic.

The first, which is really a commuter train, is a MTH G5 pulling three GGD P70 coaches.  It may also get a B60 or R50 for express items.

The second is an OEG415 (3rd Rail Brill 660) with a 3rd Rail brass R50 for local runs.

imageThe NYC ran a commuter train between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. For a few years it was headed by an ex B&A 4-6-6T Suburban, later they used RDCs called Beeliners on the Central. I also have an RS3 heading up a string of TT gray commuter coaches. I would like get some open vestabule coaches for my Moguls. I am hoping MTH does some not lettered for the Empire State Express, otherwise I may have to letter my own.
