I just fixed a Christmas Thomas for a friend, but couldn't test it as I didn't have a Lionchief remote. This raised a hypothetical question: If, for example, I had a Polar Express remote knocking about, could I pair it to the Thomas engine? If so, how?

LC and LC+ remotes are tied to a specific engine, and you can't change it. If you want a "Universal" remote, buy the LC Universal Remote.

Gotcha. So do all Thomas remotes work with all Thomas engines? Or is each engine individually tied to its controller?

Each engine goes with a specific controller based on product number. So, if you bought two identical 6-xxxxx Thomas sets, the remotes would work with either engine. However, different product numbers have unique remotes.
