Is this the old Weaver 2-8-0?
Thanks,

Yes, Atlas mentioned this during their Youtube Catalog show.

Good observation. It does look to be the Weaver 2-8-0. The plastic tender is a good way to keep the price down. They will be getting an order from me. Has a delivery date been announced?
Here is a similar view of my Weaver 2-8-0.

Tender is die cast - we will update the features accordingly.
Slightly disappointed in the choice of roadnames for this batch - a Black River & Western, New Hope & Ivyland, or Grand Canyon would've been an absolute purchase in my book. Maybe for a future run?
Nonetheless, happy to see that this tooling is still alive and well. It's definitely one of the nicer Weaver tooled steam locomotives.

I like these engines and the choice of road names. Sales will probably be best when lettered for major railroads (New York Central, Boston & Maine, Union Pacific, Chicago & Northwestern, Southern, Western Maryland). Individual dealers can do special runs if there is demand for short lines and tourist railroads.

Please be aware, as you plunk down your $720, that this is the current Atlas warranty for zinc pest:

I contacted Atlas, and I was told since my items were over 10 years old, I would not be granted any price consideration by them. In fact my protestation led the management to draft a policy specifically directed at zinc pest damages. See below:
Warranty determinations need to be specific to the condition under consideration.
For the deteriorating zinc situation that Bill and Don have submitted, Atlas will cover the truck/chassis part without charge for up to three years, following manufacture date, dependent on part(s) currently availability.
Over three years, Atlas will supply the part, if currently available, for an original warranty registered product. If not registered the customer can purchase the part if available at the standard parts rate.
After 5 years from the manufactured date, Atlas will supply the part if available at the standard parts rate.

It’s unlikely zinc rot will show up before 5 years, so this is just feel good hyperbole. Won’t cost Atlas a cent.
2 rail steam!
Mark,
I had an Atlas O 0-6-0 steamer (delivered in 2006) that I sold in 2024. It had no evidence of zinc pest. I had a problem with the pilot on an Atlas O 3-rail F-3 diesel that had been supplied with a 2-rail pilot, so I just replaced it. Now, I can run the engine only on my O-72 outer loop.

Really excited to see this great tooling brought back at an affordable price too. I'm definitely in for a Southern 630. While not a perfect match, it's closer than anything from Lionel or MTH.
No whistle steam? If not, seems like a backward move to me. Just an opinion
I am hoping someone does a custom run of the Green Southern 722 which is a sister engine of the Southern 630 at TVRM. I do like the former Weaver detail. This Atlas O second steam locomotive adventure.
@Paul Graf Can 2 rail models be equipped with third rail pickup rollers like the Premier diesels?

Not sure yet - the sample in the video was the first sample, we don't have both versions yet.
It's probably worthy of an unlettered version. I'd like to have a Reading version but I doubt anyone will sponsor that. I'm sure others may like to have an unlettered version they could have lettered with their preferred road name.
I'd be more interested in a Rutland, Lackawanna, or NKP roadname. Only the Southern 630 appeals to me from the catalogued roads.

Contact Beth. She wants to do a Rutland.

Exciting to see this small steam engine return! The Weaver models were not great, drive rods way over scale and terrible drive mechanism. I changed out the gearbox and added scale rods from an old Central Locomotive Works Pennsy H-10 and the old model is now one of the best locos on my road. Put me down for the B&M 2 rail model please!
I’m in! Would like an undecorated one, but will get NYC and reletter for CNN. JohnA
I'm happy to see Atlas included Western Maryland in this run of the 2-8-0!!

It's simple. Make the changes to match the road you want then re-decal it.

Just curious but do any of the other O gauge train companies have a better warranty for zinc pest?
I remember when Weaver came out with the 2-8-0 engines. I think it was in the early or mid 2000s. At the time I only had enough money for one engine. My choice was either the Weaver 2-8-0 or a Sunset Mohawk. I remember the Weaver being $550 and the Sunset being almost double that. I bought the Sunset because I didn't know when I would have the money for such an expensive engine again but I always looked out for the Weaver (in NYC). I never found one. About 6 years ago on the bay I did find a Boston and Maine which was lightly weathered for $350. It is conventional with no sound but it runs very smooth. When Atlas announced the 2-8-0 I was thinking, I know Atlas isn't cheap and also everything costs more these days, that the price would be a lot more than what Weaver asked for all those years ago. I was very surprised at the street price of $720. Now that MTH (at least currently) doesn't make scale wheel engines it is the only 2 rail steam engine available with DCS/DCC/sound and smoke for under $1000. The large engines like Big boys, Challengers, etc are awesome but we need small engines too. And engines at affordable prices are good for the hobby. I liked what I saw in the Atlas video and at this price point I cannot pass up on it. I will definitely be ordering one.

If it’s Premier PS3 electronics, will it have road specific freight or passenger announcements?
There is a lot of buzz and interest in this new 2-8-0. It’s the first steam engine that has had me really excited in years. Let’s hope it’s as good as people are expecting! Thanks, Atlas!! JohnA

Those road names have been done recently or are in the works by Lionel, while the Atlas 2-8-0 would be a closer model to the prototype it still means the engines will be out there for an already small market.
If they sell well Atlas will make more and the Lionel releases will be less recent. Atlas is in New Jersey so BR&W and NH&I are at least on the radar.
Like what I'm seeing, would like SP but ordered the Up from Beth.
I was ready to jump on both of the Southern engines, until I read the minimum radius is 36". I am a Rail King/PW kind of guy. My ruling curves are 31". What a show stopper (for me). Oh well.
Scott you might want to roll the dice. Sometimes stuff works on the next size down. If it doesn't you can probably recoup most of your investment.
The Weaver 3 rail version would take 031 standard Lionel tinplate curves. I'm guessing Atlas is not trying to reinvent the wheel and the only reason they may suggest the 036 is because of the new PCB connection between locomotive and tender. I bet a nickel she'll do 031.
I had always wondered where that tooling went…..now I know.

Really exciting to see the Baldwin 2-8-0 comeback after being gone for a long time, wonder if any dealers will be doing custom runs.
I just nabbed a mint undecorated 2 rail Weaver version for about half that price and I'm happy. I doubt they will do a Bangor & Aroostook so I will roll my own lol.
Vince in New Mexico
Anybody doing any custom runs???
Is this engine model based on a specific railroad prototype, or is it something like a USRA design where lots of railroads owned them. I ask because the jog in the walkway to clear the air compressor on the side of the boiler is pretty distinctive looking.

The model is based on an Illinois Central prototype.
Thanks!
This engine is a great opportunity for Atlas. Would love to see whistle steam integrated. With that addition and at the current price point I think Atlas could have a winner here. The production sample displayed at York today was nicely detailed.
I purchased one when they first came out. I thought the engine was huge and was unaware that it was based on the IC prototype. The rumor at that time was that the O consol was simply the Bachman HO consol, doubled. That would make it 1:43.5 scale. I sold the engine. Don't know if I should be regretting that or not.
Perhaps, someone should compare the model to the IC drawings. I think they are in the Loco Cyclopedia.

Ed
