Can anyone, please, advise me of the B&O LCL SENTINAL and TIME SAVER box car builder(s).
In Lionel's 2016 'Signature' catalogue Item #'s 6-27272-Sentinal and 6-27271-Time Saver, box cars are represented as PS-1, built cars.

From what researching I have done I can not find any info. stating that Pullman Standard built such cars.

Thank you,
Ralph

Ralph,

According to the "B&O Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment" by Craig T. Bossler , B&O boxcar class M-55c consisted of 500 cars numbered 46600 thru 466499 built by the General American Transportation Corporation in 1945. That is the B&O boxcar that is painted in the classic Sentinel paint scheme of silver over dark blue with the position light signal (PLS) emblem on one side.

The aforementioned source lists the blue & orange Time-Saver Service boxcar (LCL service) as built in 1947 by the Pressed Steel Car Company and classed M-55h as part of the series #467000 to #467999.

Plain oxide, red, or brown boxcars were also lettered for Time-Saver Service by the B&O shops.

Hope this information helps you.

Paul

Thank you, Paul for your very detailed and interesting info., as I now know Pullman did NOT build such cars, as I thought they didn't, but both of the new LIONEL PS-1 versions are beautiful.

Buzz you are welcome.
Did you buy the new LIONEL PS-1 SENTINEL BC, as advertised in their Signature 2016, catalogue?

Dominic,

According to the above referenced book in my previous post, the SENTINEL boxcars were used in "scheduled carload expedited freight service". I understand that to mean that they were not used in passenger trains consists. In my dozen plus B&O books and my B&ORRHS magazines (the Sentinel), I have never seen a photo of a Sentinel boxcar on a passenger train.

Paul

B&O Timesaver and Sentinal service box cars, like PRR Merchandisement Service and NYC Pacemaker Service box cars lacked steam heat lines required for normal operation in passenger passenger trains.  The PRR did have hundreds of special steam line equipped X29 box assigned to REA service that ran in passenger trains. Perhaps someone can tell us if  the B&O had box cars with steam lines and how they were painted  (I vaguely recall Weaver offering their wagon top B&O box car in a green express service scheme).

Once again I will reference "B&O Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment" The B&O did have a few express service boxcars in use on passenger trains. To reference the book, these express boxcars were utilized in the mid-sixties and were not many in number. The book states that these express cars were converted around 1965 from older, conventional boxcars. Attached is the paint scheme that was applied to these handful of cars.

Thank you, again, Paul.  That is a neat looking 'Express/Head End' car.

Dominic you are correct and a while back Weaver Models advertised and sold these beautiful 'Wagon Top' 1:48 scale model beauties, which were very prototypical in all detailing!!!!

I had bought one of each color to go along with a 'Sentinel' car and a 'Time Saver' car.  But now my cars are somewhere in the stratosphere!!!!!

All has heard of a one way ticket out, but in my case it's on my trains, on trackage outbound!!!!!

B&O had a number of M-53 wagon top box cars equipped for passenger service. These express service cars were originally painted green and later painted blue with REA markings. Class C-16 if memory serves me correctly. They were still very prevalent in the 1950's.

B&O also had 100 converted troop cars equipped for express service. Class C-17 numbered 1700-1799. They were blue with REA markings and kept their Allied full cushion trucks since they were not used in interchange service. This car was offered as one of the convention cars for the O scale national convention in 2009. It was a Weaver troop baggage painted and lettered B&O solid blue with single yellow stripe.

Many of the Lionel PS-1 cars are painted in schemes that were never applied to them, the PS-1 Boxcar being produced years later. As long as you are OK with that they make nice looking cars.

Gentlemen,

Those express boxcars were on the B&O after the 1962 merger with the C&O (notice the paint scheme). They came from the C&O, I don't think that they ever had steam lines.
