I did a search, but could not find anything that applied, so will post and hopefully some of you might have the answer.

I plan to have 2 "balloon" track configurations on each end of my layout, but was unsure on how to construct the proper benchwork to accomodate

this.  There will be two mainlines with 072 on the outside and 054 on the 2nd loop.  So I know each "balloon" will be at least 72" wide and taper back

down to about 3-4 feet wide.

Can anyone advise on what needs to be done to construct this setup?

Thanks,

OK, if I understand your question correctly, you want "rounded" bench work to match the shape of your track plan. This is not impossible, but it will be difficult to fabricate.

If I were building it, I would build the ends in a wagon wheel pattern. I would use 1x2s for the "spokes". To curve the perimeter, I would use 1x4 and make cuts about 1/2" deep every two inches. You'll probably need to test to get the cut depth and distance correct. This should make the wood flexible enough to bend.

As for fastening the framework, I use a Kreg Tool. Check them out online. A great product.  When it comes to topping the layout, use a router and an edging bit to flush cut your plywood to the edge of the bench work.

Good luck.

Kreg Tool: what a great idea! I had heard of it but it never occurred to me to use it for bench work. Too late now, but I think I will pick one up anyway.

Choose the framing of your choice. Then, let the rectangular sheet that you are using overhang the framing. Next cut the sheets to shape.

Your framing doesn't have to reach the end. Some prefer the additional supports.

I have attached a FasTrack 072 example to show board coverage before shaping. This is the long 072 with no S in it. Need close to 150" L x 84" wide before shaping and narrowing down. Track is track, so this is pretty close to the board coverage, no matter which track that you use. 2 1/4  4 x 8's. The FT turnout is 22.5º

here's an example of one of Tom Thorpe's projects

Just noticed this.

IMO: for stationary layouts consider using 3/4" Birch/Maple shop grade or for cash savings consider  3/4" Advantech over rectangular framing or use any thin plywood in a stressed skin format.

The stressed skin method is a tad difficult but but very light and rigid.

What ever you do build the sub-assemblies on a very flat surface.
