The milk tanks are prototypical. That said, I wish they left them out. Detail that is not seen, IMHO, is a waste of money. I have 7 of these milk cars and I really like them. As stated before, they are expensive. Since I don't ever plan to take off the roof or leave the doors open, I would prefer it if Lionel left the tanks off and saved me a couple of bucks.

I just purchased the Woodland Scenics H&H Feed Mill.  I didn't know it existed until yesterday when I found an ad for it in the Dec. 2016 issue of the other 3-rail publication that I had intended to set aside until December 2016 and then forgot about!  I've been so happy with my other Woodland Scenics B&R structures that as soon as I saw this I had to have it.  I'll post my own images when I have it in place on my layout.  In the meantime here's the stock image that did it for me.  I think all the "plumbing" on the roof is so neat.

feedstore-crop

I probably will replace the orange-ish LED visible in the image with something whiter; the stock LED looks to me like high-pressure sodium which I don't think existed in the 1950s.  Having made this purchase, I'll be parting with my MTH feed store and possibly my MTH granary.   My small town can't support two feed mills.  Stay tuned.

Bought these at the 2017 Lansing Model Railroad Club show last weekend. I didn’t know the SP Mint Car existed until I came across it on Amazon. I’m a big SP daylight fan so I immediately jumped on it. Similar situation for the MTH GE Evolution caboose but i bought it off of a MTH dealer. I can’t wait to try out the D&H RS-11 when I get home with a train layout to run it on!

Chris, Love the Atlantic. I agree. They're nice little engines. Mine is the first scale steam engines I bought.

I also agree.  Although the 4-4-2 design ( all roads ) popularity in the past was enormous, they have been eclipsed by the late steam giants so popular today.  Time was that this wheel arrangement was the go to for first class passenger service.  It's fortunate that the PRR's foresight in design and propensity for using smaller steam MU'ed helped keep the E6 alive until the end of steam.

Lionel's first scale E6 was also my first scale purchase.  It's now upgraded with an ERR, CCM.  I'm always on the lookout for a more recent version in Legacy.

Bruce

This is some of the stuff I got at the Boeing model train show in Kent this morning.

The trees were very impressively made, and I got a good deal on those. I would have bought more if they had any more summer trees. As for the ticket dater, it has dates that go into the 1940s, which is something I've been looking for, for many years. Normally these ticket daters sell for at least a hundred bucks, I got an absolute screaming deal on this one.

Now I need to figure out how to get a ink ribbon for it...

The prize here is the "Pittsburgh."  This combined with my original five-car set MTH 20-6565 assembles a realist prototypical B&O "The Columbian" consist.

These are certainly handsome Ron. Looking at the product locator  on MTH site they are shown with dark trucks. Is the silver from the factory? I like it. My K-Line 15" cars have silver which looks really nice.

Also, does the 5 car set have the illustrated vista dome car?  How about some photos of the whole train please?

Sam good observation, BUT!

B&O's "The Columbian" is a very special consist to eastern railroading.  Which I will hit on when I post Friday or Saturday.

But in this case MTH made these sets (the 5-car and 2-car add-on) prototypically correct.  As stated "The Columbian" is special to the B&O and eastern railroading.

"The Columbian" inaugurated May, 1949.  The two complete consist built by Pullman-Standard had silver (aluminum)  painted trucks and a gold bottom stripe.  Have gleamed this from pictures in my small (only 12-volumes) library.  A picture of the "Pittsburgh" included this in-part in the caption "... the trucks are no longer in silver (aluminum) , still ... ."

MTH also made the dome correct, low profile with flat glass window (no distortion).

Unfortunately have no trackage.  That dream has most probably vanished.  Was intending to lay some track on the hardwood (hardwood central) this Tuesday when the lady of the house was at the hair dresser.  But my lead Oncologist has scheduled me to meet (consult) with another new Specialist (number 6 on team) tomorrow.

At yesterday's Trainfest Show in Milwaukee (West Allis), WI, I picked up my 27" indexed turntable from Steve (seated) at his Ross Custom Switches booth. He even helped me load it into my car trunk before the show got rollin'. That's super service.

The demo model shown below is his 33" largest size. A really slick, heavy-duty design. Can't wait to get mine installed and "dialed in".

Navy Yard Switcher.  I picked up a Navy Yard Switcher at the Allentown Train Meet, yesterday.  I also picked up a Post-War celebration Navy submarine on flat car and a Lionel Wind Turbine.

Here's a short video of the switcher on the test track after i lubricated the gears and oiled the armature.

One question I have is lubrication of the worm gear at the lower end of the armature shaft.  I suspect removal of the brush plate is required to do so.

Pretty good to be honest. I saw a lot of families there yesterday. There were a lot of kids running around excited about the stuff on display. Also there was a good mix of stuff available. I saw plenty of postwar Lionel quite a bit of MTH and a lot of antique toys as well. I was focusing on the postwar stuff so I didn’t look at the dealers that had modern trains or other gauges but they were there.

That’s a gorgeous Pennsy turbine right there! I have one that I’m planning to repair once I order some parts for it. Mine needs new e-unit contacts and a drum. That’s always a fun repair...😐

Well, since this is a model of the Baltimore & Ohio C-16 0-4-0 “Little Joe” or “Docksider,” I would suggest B&O. Someone renumbered that MTH model, and did an accurate job. The four C-16 Docksiders were numbered 96, 97, 98, and 99. For some reason, despite issuing three runs of the Docksider lettered for the B&O, MTH always used the same road number, 97, so it would be nice to see a no. 99 out there.

By the way, nos. 96 and 99 were eventually converted to coal-burning units with tenders and reclassified as C-16a. The saddle tank was removed, so the two locomotives looked distinctly different. I wish MTH had followed up by making this switcher using the existing mechanism.

Here’s an accurately painted N scale model by Rivarossi for the no. 99.

We went out to have dinner in Tacoma, I stopped by a hobby shop along the way, I found these two books and some scale flowers, only paid 26 bucks for the whole lot of it.1124171910-1

I'm sure that it helped that the books were of a subject matter that not a lot of people around here would be interested in.

Hey Matt--when you get a chance, could you post a pic or two of that Ringling Bros engine? Video even better! :-) I've been considering that engine and would love to see it in action.

I know, I know I am really late to this party.  But have not paid any attention to the "Keepsake" offering for two or so years.

Anyway was at Kohl"s this week picking up an accessory for new Keurig.  Instead of walking directly to check-out headed to/through Christmas decor.  About 20-feet ahead was the very small Hallmark display.  At the bottom spied the silhouette of an engine I had.

The second Lionel set Santa brought me was Christmas 1948.  It was the "Electronic Set" with the Pennsy S2 turbine 671 in the lead.  So just had to have it.

I finally got an engine that I can remember from my childhood, locomotive and train books checked out from a local library, this was the only one I can specifically recall, it impressed me when I was 8 and it still impresses me,this is my 2nd steam engine after I got the Southern Pacific Daylight about a year ago,I got the Big Boy 2 weeks ago today, blown away by the size and then shocked at the weight when struggling to lift it from its styrafoam tray,it sat on static display for me to oogle over as soon as I got in from work each day, finally this evening I took it to the train room again where I struggled to lift it onto the tracks without damaging any details, only to find it impossible to get the drawbar connection in,so off the track it came and I struggled even more to get tender and engine together set on the tracks lol,

Bored, my railroads Chairman of the Bored went to a local junk mall, indoor bazaar, flea market, trailer-trashcan, etc...  Among the crowd there was a man in blue standing around waiting for work. With his price sign humbly displayed at his clean step. "Old Scool" and odd; he will not fit in on most lines around here and I'm easy. But that's cheap labor, and he did seem clean and well rounded. Lee, not sure how the value of the original volume "Southern Railway in Color" is holding now.  But several years ago when still participating I found one (was very much looking for) where the guy was asking and holding at $95.00.  I was considering it (wanted it) but was far from pristine condition, so passed.  Late found a "new" one online for $45.00.  Ended up happy.

These at-least where very hard to find.

Ron,

These books are from the 90s, but I was sort of surprised (and yet, not, at the same time) to hear this.

Not bad for $8.00 each, huh? The volume 1 has a torn dust jacket and a ding in the cover, but the content is fine.

I'm sure the value here is directly  related to how far they were from any former SRR territory.

Yes, the FRED dome definitely will need a light...a blinking light...whirling blinking lights would even be better!!

That red light isn't just for show; it works already.

(a tripod, two plastic AF wheels only at the rear. Up front the coupler keeps it straight while the 'thumbtack" acts as the center rail pickup (and third tripod leg). The outside rail pickup is a "track wiper"; (a length of solid wire that rubs the inside edge of the outer rails.)

In the dark, the FRED is the hardest to see well (except the red light)

So I will need an overhead lamp to insure Tweety is seen as well as the saucer.

Picked up a 1946 version Lionel 2020 in decent condition for a fairly good price. The engine came through the store in a collection and was to be sold as untested. I tested it and sniped it as fast as I could. Ran and cycled like a champ with the tender having slight issues. Tender got oiled and cleaned and now it's one of my loudest. Definitely one of the cooler things that's run under the Christmas tree over the years. Been adding a few Postwar pieces each year and now I'm up to a 671 (1947), 682, 685, and that 2020 along with various cars including a 6464-225 and a 6464-900.

This past weekend I went to a Train show in Edison NJ.

This is what I purchased:

The Lionel 116 was $7.00.
The 59 lamppost with another base was $2.00 (found in a junk box on the floor).
Prewar Motor was $5.00 (wheels need replacement and think one winding on the armature is bad, Maybe an easy fix, if not it will be parts).
Brand new Prewar pick-up $5.00

Nice little haul....I do junk boxes under the tables also...never know what you might find. One man's junk is another man's treasure!

Repairs. My Century Club S2 Turbine got bound up a few years back and I had put it in storage for a bit. Well, I had sort of forgot to get it done and recently I accidentally popped my Western Maryland boxcar(in the box) off of where it was sitting against the wall(because I tripped). After picking it up, I knew something was wrong. The one diecast truck came apart. So, I took that and the S2 to my local train store to get fixed. The truck was easy, no big deal. The S2 however was bound up because of "over lubing or over greasing". I hadn't really thought that would be why because my first thought was mechanical issues of some sort.

Is that even possible? Hardened; I understand. Over lubed; ?¿?¿?, it's making my head hurt trying to figure that one.

Unless lube crept all the way to the motor and fouled it?

I could never do that.

Bob, The Williams BL-2 looks great!  I'm glad you like it!  I have the MTH version and like it too!

Thanks Mark- its a lot bigger than I thought. I little tight on 027 curves but it works.

Bob

Yes, it is scale and made for 031 curves, but I would think mine could do 027 also.

I had a borrowed one for a bit. It ran 0-27 no problem.

I don't think some companies want to admit 0-27 is out there because they don't make it ....?

I guess if the S2 was packed solid and capped under pressure with no air space, the loco might hydro lock.

My head hurts.

Yeah, it was baffling to say the least. I always would lube per the instruction when taking something that has been stored. I remember checking the grease to see how good/bad that was in there(which looked okay at the time). Odd thing was it was running fine Christmas night(so many Christmas's ago), and it just stopped running. That is why I thought it was mechanical. I something was running and stopped, you'd figure it would be gearing or something, not crudded up grease that just decided to stick like glue.

The thing that made my local train guy and his daughter's eyes bug out was managing to break the diecast truck on the Western Maryland boxcar while still in the box. I said about it that it must have hit just right to break the one side of the truck off. Well, I guess odd things pop up for everyone, this one was mine.

Sounds like you need a new brand of grease. What was it? I want to avoid it. It usually takes a decade or two for even cheap greases to get "crunchy" or stiff. I have a ½ gal. can from the early 60s that looks brand new (Wolfs head). I save it for bicycle hubs etc. just due to age.

Labelle has specific weights for trains, but I usually use 20w or 30w straight weight motor oil, Lubriplate Aero, or steal Lucas soft & tacky from my garage's grease gun.

In high number metal production, there will be a few flaws and shocks are good at finding them. No cheap way to ensure it never leaves the plant. Luck of the draw is all.

Standard Lionel lube/maintenance kit. Will definitely need new stuff this season. I want to say someone used something called gunslick for oil or greasing.

Well, thats a graphite gun grease with a stellar reputation. (but I'm an oil guy in weapons. Thick?).  Birchwood Casey "Sheath" is my fav. at the moment.. which I also wipe all train metal with. (plastic safe too. Kinda light, but doing it's job well so far; doesn't seem to collect crud, low odor on spray day, and wipes clean & "dry"(read as too thin to see) prety easily, and alcohol cleans it totally dry.

I'd have to guess that it was the kit (I'm pretty sure there was a few "bad years" for Lionel & grease)

Or it was too heavy, or just plain incompatable. At least it survived and you kinda learned a little something, eh? Lube often has a shelf life, and don't mix them if you can help it. Pick and stick to it, or be observant of it at least.

Let's move this to its own topic. I want to ask some questions.

About 15 yrs ago, after not working on my layout for about 2 yrs, I decided to sell it to a friend. Well....... Last yr I  started building a small layout (8' x 4') with the help of the grand kids, we call it the "Mystery Mountain", one of the trains is 8' long, it enters and completely disappears in the  2.5' long mountain, then exits out the other end.

I've got the bug to build another larger layout. Lately I've been acquiring several stuff for it. A few months back, I purchased some building kits, some from forum members here. I put them together, little detailing and added lights.  Here three of them.

A MTH scale premier big boy protosounds. If you check out our club post under the announcements section here, you will see it running. Quite well it did. It is posted on page 6 of that thread there. Best part is A.C. paid for 1/2 of it so Borgata owns the tender and part of the cab. LOL! Got an excellent deal on it. Beautiful engine that MTH produced.

Wow that's cool his last train before he passed was the "Spirit of 1776"!

I never got to see 2839 under steam, that was too early in life for me to have gone looking for her in the SRR steam program as I was a kid then.

Ah, 4501. An old friend. I saw her in green-gold when I was 4 years old, going through my hometown (a rare ferry move over the SCL). Saw her a few times afterward, but always cold. Finally saw her running for the second time last year, much closer and personal, and got to ride behind her from TVRM to Summerville, GA and back. Man, what a day...

I’ve never been much of a steam engine guy (only have 3 on my entire “roster”), but I decided to add a 4th during during Nassau Hobby’s “Black Friday Sale” over Thanksgiving weekend.

This Lionel Legacy Erie Heavy Mikado was already marked down on Charlie’s website, but with the additional 15% discount AND free shipping bringing the price down to $850 delivered, I couldn’t resist the temptation!

A great-looking engine with all the Legacy bells and whistles (pun intended), and whistle steam to boot.  And the best part is that it worked flawlessly right out of the box!

Well I am not much into stock cars.  In fact have two never opened that are part of 6-car sets.  Now if someone made the Pennsy rebuilt old round tops would have brought one.

But never realized that  double decker stock cars were made in O until seeing Patrick's (Trumptrain).  Did an ebay for Lionel found some.  When finding out that his was a K-Line searched and found a NIB (sealed box) K-line car at Grzboski's for $35.00.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that wanted the Pennsy round roof ones.  I'll find some Lionel X-31's and cut them up, then everyone will make them.

Gene, I was beginning to think I was the only one.  But with the reality of tooling cost figured never happen.

I had two MTH RK round tops that thought about transforming.  But probably could not find any acceptable 'white" decals.

Grabbed a LC Thomas the Tank Engine so he can run alongside the Pennsy my son is getting for Christmas. I need to grab a transformer for it though so I don't accidentally place any of my other units on the DC tracks (running the LC's on a wall wart right now) and ruin them.

Grabbed a bunch of 10" straight track and O36 curve track, as well as a manual switch for a siding thanks to the Kohl's megasale deal. Also grabbed a trestle for my O27 track, so I can elevate my trolley above the two FasTracks on my layout. And last but not least, grabbed three bridges (two girder bridges, and one short extension bridge) for the layout as well.

I always wanted a Lionel 520 Electric.  May not be exciting to some, but they are interesting to me.

Always like this loco and detailing should not ne that hard, maybe a better pantograph, hand rails etc. Please post any mods that you do, I would be interested in them.

I m looking for a 520 running chassis with frame so that I can mount a Lionel prewar 252 body on it. Saw this in the forum somewhere and thought it looke nice with a overhang on each end.

Did not buy this but found this vise in my Grandmother's childhood home.  In the basement  we saw what left of my Greatgrandfather's old workbench. The workbench was beyond saving.  Attached to my greatgrandfather's workbench was the vise. I asked my Dad if I could have it and we were able to unbolt it from the bench so now I need to build a new workbench since my old one would not suport this vise. Glad I was able to rescue  the vise before it was tossed out just like the few Hudson Motors manuals that were his when he was a mechanic that I was able to save several years ago.

that broken boom is typical for that car as you most likely know. Replacement booms are available but originals can be a bit pricey.
