I was wondering if the side rods on any of the post war 773 Hudsons were painted silver or were bare metal. Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

I've never seen a painted side rod on any postwar steam engine. Some were plated and some were not, but never painted.

The 1950 version of the 773 would have had cadmium plated side rods. If they were in a damp location they would have corrode with a yellowish power look. The 1964 version would have had either zinc plating or nickel plating. I do not have this loco so I do not know for sure. Corrosion of the zinc would be a white powder. On the nickel, corrosion would come through the nickel and just look like red rust.
